    1. Create a free Nextdns account.
    2. Add some blocklists
    3. Use the private dns settings on your android to set the dns. (i think this feature is present in Android versions which are 9 and above)

Voila ! you have blocked ads without wasting your VPN slot.

As an added bonus you can also configure nextdns to block your specific phone vendor tracking as well.

If you are interested in trying different web browsers you can check out Fennec from F-droid or Brave browser. These are my go-to browsers on android.

  • I know 2 apps

    1. Milktea
    2. Kaiteki

Milktea seemed to work for me when I tried it when Firefish was still called calckey.social. kaiteki app just gave me a blank screen, so can't comment on that.

Anyway, I just use the web app if I use firefish.

What are some smaller Lemmy / Kbin instances that are just as good as lemmy.world

  • On my old phone i used Florisboard, it was pretty good and it's FOSS as well.

These days I use the samsung keyboard as I recently switched to a samsung device. The keyboard customizations are really awesome, if you have KeysCafe module installed. Not sure how privacy friendly it is tho.

  • 2 months ago I bought a regular samsung galaxy s23 and it's been running great so far. I expected MIUI levels of bloat, but surprisingly it is not that bad.

I had to disable a few samsung apps and for the most part, the phone stays out of my way and lets me do whatever i want.

I wish the s23 lineup gets good custom rom support. Would love to run a lean LineageOS / any AOSP based rom with MicroG on this phone.

  • Opensuse is great. Yast was more useful than I initially thought.

On a different note - For people who like tinkering, nixos can also be a great option, it also allows rollbacks but doesn't use BTRFS snapshots out of the box like opensuse.

  • At first, I also told myself that I didn't have the time. Then i tried it.. felt like there's a lot to learn, it was similar to when I first started using Arch.

Originally I intended to remove it after trying for a week, but it's been over 2 months and I have yet to expeience any issue. I'm gonna be staying with this one for a while.
