YSK that apart from not having a car and voting, the single greatest thing you can do for the climate is simply eating less red meat.

  • I would also assume this, if I hadn't also repeatedly witnessed the exact behaviour the OP describes. The "instant honk on green" drivers also tend to follow up with whatever reckless maneuver allows them to beat you to the next red light by 1.5 seconds. Inattentiveness and impatience are both dangerous on the road.

  • I think I probably agree with your assessment, but I really just wanted to highlight that this thinking is endemic to western culture, or at least the slice of it with which I am familiar. Sure, a lot of people might not say things like this face-to-face, but you probably wouldn't be shocked if you witnessed it, would you?

    Just like with any other harmful idea, all it takes is one person in a room to say it loudly and persistently while everyone else says nothing (or fecklessly points out the person's gender as if dispensing some profound insight).

    • Is it morally wrong for an immigrant or naturalized citizen to "keep a low profile" and avoid speaking up against the government in order to minimize the risks of denaturalization/deportation?

  • A big part of the nuance you mention is that Keating was not only defending McBride, but also defending the dignity (what little there may be) of the US legislative body, and fulfilling his role as a publicly elected representative to advocate for the interests of the people he represents.

    Also, while I do believe Keating deserves way more public attention and praise for this than I have seen, I would not say that he went "above and beyond" by defending McBride. He did what should have been done by anyone in his position.
