  • Defending the confederacy is an incredibly unkind way to frame someone's position, so thanks for that.

Why? It's simple. Israel wants the land. Palestinians are currently occupying the land. Hence, Israel wants to ethnically cleanse the Palestinians so they can occupy and use the land. Individual Israelis may view it in religious terms, and things may be framed that way for messaging purposes, but the cause of the conflict is a very material desire for more land and more resources.

  • No, you're mistaken. It wouldn't matter if it had no religious sites on it, anymore than it didn't matter that North and South America didn't have any religious sites on it that would have meant anything to the Europeans who colonized it.

This conflict is material in nature.

  • Of course, the stereotype is mostly a product of marketing. Fewer than 100,000 of the ~2 million workers in Alberta are employed in oil and gas. Whereas 1.5 million of them are employed in services of some sort. 81% of Alberta is urban, which is in line with the Canadian average. The average Albertan is pretty much the same as the average Canadian, an underpaid urban service worker. With a small, well paid minority of workers who really mess up the stats.

  • Postmedia now sells not just native ads but even news coverage and space on its opinion pages for those willing to pay, as a Canadaland investigation revealed in 2020. Its business model, as my recent book The Postmedia Effect shows, is simply to rake in as much cash as possible from all available sources in order to keep sending tens of millions of dollars a year in payments on its massive debt south to its US hedge fund owners/bondholders.

Lay off your journalists and sell preferential coverage to whichever organizations need to sanitize their message seems to be Postmedia's current business model. It's a lot cheaper when the stories come to you, I suppose.
