  • A simple network sniffer is enough to figure out what sites the app is connecting to, then you can just block them on the router.

If you are using Android, you can do that easily right on your phone with PCAPdroid, it's on the play store. No root required.

  • Something tells me this isn’t the last word on the issue. If the fediverse concept is to succeed, then its two (current) largest players need to have some cross-functionality.

I strongly disagree here. They might be using the same protocol, but the user expectations are something completely different. I've tried mastodon and really don't get the appeal, just like I never understood why people want something like Twitter. And I'm sure there are some Mastodon users out there who can't be bothered about Lemmy.

Forcing them into one common framework feels like alienating both to me.

  • The idea of a non-profit holding sounds great, but what about collateral damage if shit really hit the fan? Would it not be smarter to have a separate entity for each platform? They could all have essentially the same statutes, boards, directors etc. etc., so in case if one really got under heavy fire, the others wouldn't be affected? I know it means more admin work and probably also requires some governing policies with regards to the funding distribution, but might be cleaner in the end.

  • Fucking bastards. I don't even know what beef they have with the community and why, but using THAT method to get them to shut down is nothing short of despicable. What absolute scum.

  • Filter is not block though, if you open the instance on your browser, you still see them. Only if you actually block them, they are gone.

  • Yep, confirmed. Not working for me either in Beta 30.

  • I'm pretty sure they do it to fly under the radar, since mobile clients are far more dominant than smart TV applications.

And there's also newpipe as an alternative to Vanced (or rather the other way around, I believe newpipe came earlier), and even a fork with sponsorblock integration. I personally vastly prefer them over vanced/revanced.

  • You mean, only on Android TV. They don't have a phone app, and explicitly stated they are not interested in developing one.

  • So that's why you have 2 accounts ;-)

  • Workplace policy leading to inherent familiarity with the system.

Plus most people aren't heavy users or particularly tech-savvy. Installing an OS from scratch is already too much to ask for most.

  • An inactive account is just an entry in a database. The impact on the server is negligible.

  • Um, no. It flags it for the user to review and urges a removal, that you can ignore. That's it.

I live in China and have a Xiaomi phone as a work device, and use all sorts of apps the powers that be don't like on it.

  • They have pirated apps? That's news to me.

  • Works for me.

  • 2033, yes.

2034 felt disjointed to a point I wasn't even sure it was written by the same person. Gave up reading eventually, about 1/3 in.

  • Nah. They don't know Google translate. Or Google, for that matter. They know what they are supposed to know.

Of course some people know better, and those are the ones who will eventually get around the block - finding and installing a VPN is not rocket science, not even here. But if you keep 98% of the population contained, the rest won't reach critical mass.
