  • I get that but I feel like we're much closer than you think. Hand tracking has been a thing in budget headsets for years now and it's really solid. There are quite a few really fun experiences that don't require controllers at all.

Apple is about to ditch controllers completely, combining hand tracking with eye tracking. The displays are almost as sharp as real life and headsets today are fully wireless, standalone computers while being 50% slimmer than your Vive. Oh yeah, they also map the environment automatically and have high definition 3D passthrough with AR capabilities.

A lot of that stuff was considered science fiction when the Vive was released. What you want from VR is happening within the next decade, no lightyear jump needed.

  • The OG Vive is a really horrible experience compared to modern VR headsets already. There are incredible technological advancements being made and to say all VR is doing is waiting for some Star Trek technology is incredibly ignorant. And frankly an insult to those super talented engineers that are breaking new ground on a yearly basis.

  • Which headset did you use? I had the same experience with my old Rift. Got a used Quest 2 recently and all my problems just vanished. I can even do smooth locomotion now which was impossible before.

Might be worth checking out some newer tech in case your HMD was first gen

  • Siri was always shit but somehow managed to devolve even further lately. I never trusted her to do more than than turning lights on or off but now this shit happens:

Me: Siri, turn off the lights in the living room

Siri: OKAY, WHICH ROOM? BATHROOM, BEDROOM, KITCHEN, HALLWAY, LIVING ROOM?

Imagine living in a mansion with this cunt

  • He has a point and i would personally always prefer one of his movies over anything Marvel/DC but just let people enjoy what they want, Jesus.

And what actually saved the cinemas sure wasn't Hugo or his Netflix film Irishman but all those multi billion comic book blockbusters. Not sure how many cinemas would still exist without them.

  • Totally agree, I guess the horizontal scrolling is its only redeeming quality. I did not now it was a lightning connector, that makes it even worse. If I remember correctly you can thank Johnny Ive for this shit.

  • This mouse was released when Apple favored a clean design over everything else. While i don't agree with that decision, it lasts for days with just a couple of minutes of charging. Getting people to buy it twice just for that reason had nothing to do with it, who in their right mind would do that?

  • Exactly, of course there a correlation between the two but they must have gotten to a point where Prime Video sign-ups don't boost their regular Prime user base anymore, so they had to do something about Prime Video operating at a net loss.

As i said before, Prime Video was never intended to be a "free" addition to regular Prime forever, this is something everyone should have seen coming.

Thanks for your kind words, to have an actual debate about this is all i wanted instead of reading the same, undifferentiated bullshit that seems to take over Lemmy more and more...

  • You guys just keep throwing everything in the same pot. I don't like Amazon and don't even have an account.

To raise the price (by 3 measly bucks) for a service that doesn't make money is something a listed company IS REQUIRED to do. That's all I am saying.

It has nothing to do with how much money the company makes in other areas and is a completely separate issue from the horrible working conditions, which is a political one.

But i guess it's easier to just cry about everything while still throwing money at them and then jerking each other off because you commented "aMaZon SuCks". Talk about the right side of the fence

  • I'm not paying anything, my Quest runs completely offline. I use a separate router for streaming and the Quest is mac address blocked in my main router (just to be sure). ALVR is side loaded onto the Quest so i can play Steam VR games without the need for the Oculus app on my PC at all. It's not that hard to do if you care about your privacy.

I'm not exactly sure which community they "completely destroyed" but your whole reasoning for that sounds extremely subjective to me. Facebook controls 90% of the VR market, followed by Pico with 4.5%, which is basically a Chinese reverse engineered Quest with ports of Quest games.

Without FB there is no VR market and there is no scenario where Oculus could have managed to sell a similar amount of headsets if Facebook hadn't bought them.

That being said, i sincerely hope Facebook loses this race and I am pretty terrified of the future when it comes to VR.

  • In addition to what the other commenters have said: They don't just sell light bulbs but also motion sensors that can even measure temperature.

So they wouldn't just be able to tell which room you're in at any given time but may also be able to tell when and for how long you shower or how often you cook food in the kitchen based on slight temperature changes.

And if you wanna get really paranoid: Hue Sync analyzes what's on your screen and synchronizes lights accordingly. Who knows what is really going on there if they pull this kinda shit lol

  • They charge for Prime (Delivery) and until now, Prime Video was included in that price. I hate Amazon as much as the next guy (don't even haven an account) but all i read from you guys is exactly this kind of unconstructive rambling.

What the fuck do you expect? That a listed mega corporation just goes like "Oh you know what we make billions, what does it even matter if one of our services doesn't make any money, let's just keep going, not like we have shareholders to answer to".

Remember when people used to pay 5 bucks to rent a VHS for ONE DAY and no one lost their mind about it? Without constantly whining about Blockbusters profit margin?

But thanks for clearing up that Amazon is a billionaire owned company, only read that for the 500th time this week.
