This is kinda why I wish we had user-level instance blocking, there aren't any popular instances that match my preferred blocklist and I don't want to have to go out and request federation for everything I want to see. For example, the top sites I don't want to see are lemmy.ml, lemmygrad, and exploding-heads, and while beehaw gets all three, they also block instances I don't find problematic like lemmy.world.
So I ended up on lemmy.world and manually block all the stuff I don't want to see, but it'd be loads easier if I could just ask not to be shown content from instances I want to avoid.
Alright, let's say I'm a Windows user who wants to dual-boot Linux and was planning on Fedora because I've heard it's pretty good for someone transferring over from that OS, but this telemetry bullshit has turned me away.
In addition, even if the communities are built around the same content, not every instance is the same. I explicitly avoid lemmy.ml because I've seen them ban people for criticizing China's government and discussing the genocide of the Uyghur people. As such, I appreciate having a lemmy.world variant of this community.
On PC, you're better off just getting BattleBit Remastered if you're not turned off by the graphics. It's more mil-sim than BF but not as heavy-handed as an actual mil-sim, which makes it pretty damn fun. The only thing I miss is being able to parachute.
I'd argue reddit lost their identity days ago. Several iconic communities and features died with the API slaughter. Now it's just another link aggregator without the things that made reddit unique.

In this case, 343 management (since replaced) used 18-month contractors to perform the engine overhaul and build the game across the several years it was in development in order to save a buck, which in turn meant there were countless holes in engine knowledge and the engine was spaghetti code. That resulted in unfinished tools for months after launch and slow game development as a result, as well as major desync issues where you could be in an entirely different area on your screen than you were according to the server. The monetization and FOMO was also off the rails, with absurdly difficult and annoying weekly challenges that were necessary to grind the battlepass and unlock anything for free. Basic color sliders were taken away in favor of "armor coatings," and as such, to date I still cannot recreate my Halo Reach Spartan even though I have all the armor pieces necessary thanks to the Season 1 battlepass (which is the only battlepass I own, since I bought it during the honeymoon period and it doesn't contain any credits to buy the next battlepass). They did successfully commit to having battlepasses that don't expire, but only if you paid for it, otherwise it still expires and this was only mentioned for the first time like a week before Season 2.
The list kinda goes on and on, but the tl;dr is that devs and players alike both got hyper-fucked by Bonnie Ross.
Personally, for the same reason that I get annoyed when streets get renamed. This community isn't named the way it is to support hate and the vast majority of its users disagree with hateful viewpoints, it's named like this so people can find the community of PC enthusiasts that they're looking for. This is what it was on reddit, thus it's the same here.
To be blunt, if people don't like the name, the best solution is to stop posting content here and instead post in an alternative community with a name they find more suitable. Nobody's here for the name, they're here for the content and the people and they'll migrate if those do. Just like reddit's recent exodus.

Why not? kbin literally has an "activity" button that shows everyone who downvotes, it's public info. Makes blocking morons a breeze because I can say something like "trans people are cool" and then get rid of everyone who gets angry about it.
If you're scared of people knowing what you downvote, you might need to change your downvote habits.
I don't think so, reddit was so dominant that had they simply not decided to anger all their power users, we'd all still be on there like nothing had changed. A good platform has staying power, I've been on Steam for 16 years and I have no plans of bailing on it because it's simply the best gaming platform I've ever used. It's not game lock-in or anything, most of my games I could buy elsewhere or pirate, I just like having the features and all these other ones popping up like GOG Galaxy still aren't overtaking it despite the good PR.
Maybe if Valve could work out shipping them to other regions officially we'd see more growth. I still see people lamenting that they can't buy a Deck without going to some sketchy third-party and overpaying.

But be wary that lemmy.ml is a tankie instance and the ".ml" stands for Marxism-Leninism. I generally avoid lemmy.ml communities so I don't get banned for saying "the uyghur genocide is a real thing" or anything.
