  • No I think he knows exactly what he's doing and it has very little to do with anything Trump does, despite what he or anyone else says.

He's handing our money to corporations and butt fucking us in a much quieter way than PP would have, but he seems to be doing it very intentionally.

  • I know plenty of poor people or people that grew up lower class (including myself and my partner) who didn't eat fast food every day.

There's also plenty of rich people (like the orange moron) who very willingly eat fast food regularly.

Any of those people might have alcohol or substance use disorders, which are human conditions, and in no way mean a person is disgusting or undesirable.

And I'd argue that statistically, people who are more careful about their dietary intake, are also probably less likely to have alcohol dependence, but that's purely an empirical observation, I've never checked the data on that.

  • At my work there is like a 70-year-old security guard who spends his 12-hour days learning new languages. I don't know how his other languages are, but when he speaks Spanish to me, he does so extremely well. The only issue is that sometimes he gets mixed up and speaks Mandarin instead of Spanish to me but we're not gonna fault him for that one.

To be fair, the man is a retired physiology professor so he's been learning his whole life and is probably a pretty smart dude, but I'm sure if you apply yourself and enjoy learning, you wouldn't have an issue at least getting the basics of another language.

  • The point he was trying to make is that people that eat McDonald's every day are unhealthy, and sure, the alcoholism on top of it made everything worse, but do we really think that MCD's is the only bad choice those people are making?

Like someone willing to eat a shitload of fast food (not for a movie) also is likely to have alcohol or substance use disorders, or eat unhealthy amounts of sugar, or not exercise.

I think a fair point was made regardless of the shenanigans.

  • In our current world? Money.

Support politicians and businesses that do not align with this. Boycott businesses that do.

Donate/volunteer with anti racism/pro-lgbtqia+ groups. Go to protests. Write your local politicians. Make sure those in power know you do not stand with that bullshit.

It might not feel like a "big" thing (if that's what you mean by meaningful) but if we were all willing to do it, it would make a difference.

  • This would be great if they did it. However, Canada is still providing weapons or vital weapons parts that are being funneled to Israel through US trade. We are still providing weapons to Israel and just taking their word for it that they aren't being used for murder. Words mean nothing if we continue to provide the means for genocide.

  • I was thinking if it's just a ballot that has a number but it's not attached to your name. I.e. if the person handing out the ballots gives you a random one and you're the only one who knows your own number. I've never used electric voting machines but maybe a randomly generated number that you can know but nobody else would know?

  • Yeah there's a few in Canada too that still use the coin. They usually will give you a coin to use if you go to customer service and ask. Most places just gave up though and abandoned that system. I wonder if it was costing them more to try to maintain or something. I'd imagine that people who have a cart tend to buy more, whereas if they're forced to use baskets because they don't have a coin, they might not buy as much. I know that's the case for me at least.

  • This is insane peak capitalism at work. Paying "donations" to an organized group to provide food and shelter is literally just recreating what the government should be doing with taxes. If this cartel is real, it's just criminalized socialism.

As long as they're not hurting anyone, I'm not against it, but that's just such a batshit crazy concept that that's where we're at with the world.

  • I haven't done the type of deep dive research others mention here but I trusted my doctor when he told me this was a good choice for me. I also don't live in the US so have no reason to believe he's being paid off. If there are worse consequences than what I've discussed with him already, I guess I'll have to deal with that.

There are also non-medicinal ways to treat binge eating, and I've known people that have had good success with therapy/CBT for that, in case that's something you can afford or are interested in.

  • I'll bite. I'm on it for what some people here would consider "recreational" purposes (weight loss). However, I have polycystic ovaries and have had extreme difficulty losing weight in other ways. Essentially the only way I can lose weight is doing a pretty severe calorie deficit, which is really hard to do and essentially means I am starving all the time. Ozempic has helped me curb that perpetual feeling of hunger, and besides diarrhea (which I already had often anyway), it hasn't caused me that many side effects.

Essentially PCOS causes a craving for carbs and sugar. It's hard to fill that hole, but there are other ways to supplement the things that my body is not creating which make me crave those things. While I'm on ozempic (I don't plan on using it long-term) I'm also working to make changes to my diet to make sure I'm getting those things I was missing (B12, chromium picolante, some other stuff with scientific names).

And I know people think it's just "lazy", which it is for some people, but I struggle to lose weight even with exercise and calorie deficits. Ozempic has helped me lose some, but not as drastic as other people.

I have friends who are on waygovy (the same drug as ozempic but specifically targeted at weight loss) and they've had more side effects than me, but they are significantly bigger, have less healthy lifestyles and are I believe on a much higher dose than me. They've lost a ton of weight though.
