  • If the FTC wasn’t such a limp dick for the past 2 decades, things may have turned out differently. All of these problems are the result of too much consolidation and not enough competition.

That’s why I’m excited about Khan’s FTC since she is actually doing her job. Despite a couple of high profile losses, they’re winning more than they’re losing and, most importantly, they’re deterring anticompetitive mergers since companies now have to think twice or risk a lawsuit.

  • I remember reading about the ethical question about the hypothetical self driving car that loses control and can choose to either turn left and kill a child, turn right and kill a crowd of old people, or do nothing and hit a wall, killing the driver. It's a question that doesn't have a right answer, but it must be answered by anybody implementing a self driving car.

I non-sarcastically feel like Tesla would implement this system by trying to see which option kills the least number of paying Xitter subscribers.

  • Are you being serious, or just circle jerking to feel good making fun of people? If they knew it was stupid, they wouldn't believe it. Clearly, they don't realize that their beliefs are stupid. We can either try to help them, or bully them until they quietly vote for Trump again or attempt another coup.

  • When was the last time you convinced someone they were wrong by calling them stupid? A lot of people who are smarter than you are falling for this scam. The last time Trump won, the polling suggested he was going to lose because people who were thinking of voting for him didn't talk about it publicly for fear of being mocked by people like you.

  • Yet if the latest New York Times poll is right — and we’re still a long way from the presidential elections — many Americans either believe Trump’s alleged crimes didn’t occur or they think they aren’t that big a deal.

It has to be the former. I think the one and only thing that sets these "lunatics" apart from the rest of us is simply that they trust Trump. The things he says are terrifying, and would drive any otherwise sane person to do crazy things to defend their country if they were true. I don't think it's fair to call these people evil or stupid, they're just being played by a master scam artist. Add a little bit of ego and stubbornness to it, and I can see someone rejecting logical arguments if they're coming out of the mouth of someone who just called them an idiot.

  • Considering you’re on lemmy, I think it’s safe to assume you’re good with technology. Imagine someone in your life who isn’t good with technology trying to install the Epic Games store (without assistance)

First they have to track down the toggle to allow “unknown sources” (it’s never in the same place on all Android phones, they move it so that it’s hard to find), which presents a scary and vague warning about malware that a non-techie will never understand. Then they have to track down and install the APK, which presents even more scary warnings, then they get pestered by a “Play Protect” dialog which gives google permission to remotely disable the app (and the dialog can’t be permanently dismissed, so everyone will agree eventually)

Think about how you could run a successful app store in that environment. The cost of user acquisition is very high compared to Google. The only way to do it is to strike deals with OEMs to ship with your store, but Google has been caught either threatening or bribing these manufacturers to not accept those deals from competitors. Additionally, Google pays full time engineers to analyze competitors stores to search for vulnerabilities, and then leak them to the press before they get a chance to patch them, just to scare people away.

There’s probably more stuff I’m forgetting. This is all stuff that came out years ago when Epic first launched their store and got into public fights with Apple and Google. There are articles from back then that really go into the details if you’re interested in the topic.

  • What if this turns out to be a good thing? Apple/Google remove Xitter from their store, Musk gets all whiny about it, uses his billionaire corruption powers to get regulators to finally acknowledge that app store monopolies are bad, Apple/Google are forced to allow third party stores (without anti-competitive barriers, as in Google's case).

And Elon Musk turns out to be a hero for consumers and the free market!

  • A few million/year is a reasonable amount of money for a (highly) successful person to make. A wealth tax for people making over a billion or just $100M per year is enough to fix a lot of the problems in this country without destroying the "American dream"

  • I've always wondered why anyone would drink beer without alcohol in it. I always assumed it was only ever used by alcoholics trying to kick their addiction, or desperate teenagers who can't get a fake ID.

Do you just really like the taste of beer?

  • Reminds me of this company I have to deal with that sells specialty equipment, but the software for interacting with it is hosted on Google Drive. The other day I ran into an issue because they forgot to "share" one of the links, so you couldn't actually download anything without requesting access. Had to scour the web for an old build hosted on what looked like the first website on the internet.

So yeah, some devs are clueless about these kinds of things. I think hardware people in general either don't know or don't care to learn about the software side beyond the bare minimum.
