  • Damn more echoes of Xitter, this is almost exactly what they did as well lmao

  • Chill with the FUD. As a web host there have been far more cases of random web hosts doors being busted down by the feds for hosting copyrighted material than CSAM they had no reasonable knowledge of.

  • Yes. They can stress test it if it is not under tight lock and key. It is why these databases are so heavily guarded and every new user for it are heavily vetted.

  • Yes. But only if you are in the US and get an API key from NCMEC. They are very protective of who gets the keys and require a zoom call as well. There is hope cloudflare will integrate with other countries database as well but we will see. There is also active discussion of deals to provide hash scanning software to fediverse instances more easily as well.

  • Some countries (mainly the US. I don't know about elsewhere.) require preservation of the files in some sort of storage that is secured access only for at least 90 days and is essentially treated like toxic waste. (usually a tiny VPS)

  • Right now all images are cached by default, even external ones. A copy is downloaded into pictrs. A fix is being worked on to disable that very very soon soon. It was being worked on before this due to storage cost issues ballooning long term but yeah.

  • And that is completely understandable. Everyone has their own risk tolerance like @expatriado@lemmy.world said. The removal of caching remote images is coming soon, like most likely days away from release into lemmy. And although it is not the only tool we need it is a step in the right direction.

  • There was some intense controversy behind it, same thing with .exposed (for obvious reasons). It's shitty because it's extremely overpriced, like 200$ or so for a year of registration. The company behind is quite scummy and advertises it to companies to buy it for PR purposes, so some buy it and redirect to their feedback page.

  • Interesting.. I know firefish has issues with lemmy quite a bit.

  • Woah this is formatted extremely strangely on lemmy

  • I think mainly news and journalists, it would also be nice to see more activists there as well and Youtubers. To be quite honest most influencers and celebrities can stay the fuck away for all I care unless they are actually providing shit of substance. It is very nice being able to completely ignore the Kardashians or generally whatever stupid celebrity drama is going on now.

  • Make a request on github or see if there is one already. I could if need be. It's open source and it seems like as a feature, it would be important to do so. I think a good option would be at least allowing the ability to increase storage limits on a user basis as an admin, that way people can donate to help cover that excess cost involved with hosting images.
