I say this as someone who hates tankies just as much as the next dude, but that community isn't really productive nor helpful. If you seriously have an issue with lemmygrad there are many instances that have defederated from them (i think sh.itjust.works is?). A community like that does nothing but to bring drama within the lemmyverse. Yes, their views are at times abhorrent but you are just provoking a community that already has major issue with large portions of the lemmyverse. We really should leave that toxic drama stirring behind.
I think lemmy will have an eternal September moment eventually when the platform improves. Mastodons will likely be soon. It's not a good thing nor is it a bad thing. There will be both benefits to it and negatives as well.
It's unfortunate people want centralization and seem openly hostile when discussions are had about ways to encourage decentralization. When reddit goes down, you can't use reddit. When a lemmy instance goes down, you can simply go on other lemmy instances. That's a major issue with lemmy.world right now and it being seen as the "default" instance
I think lemmy and it's growth is the biggest step forward in the direction of the fediverse becoming "mainstream" alongside twitters implosion
As this platform specifically develops more and the front end UI improves in spite of its current flaws, I feel like lemmy and kbin are probably the most likely to be picked up by the general public as it is the easiest to navigate and populate with content. You can federate whole communities in with tons of content, instead of just individual users. There are quirks but I think it has the most potential, it's like the fediverse was made for this kind of platform in mind specifically.
It's a platform still in its infancy but improving rapidly, social.photo is a pretty good one if you want a smaller instance, it's hosted by the admin over at discuss.online. I'm not a member of discuss.online but I can vouch that @jgrim@discuss.online is an awesome sysadmin and I have full faith in him maintaining that instance long term (if you're ever worried of signing up to a small instance and it disappearing.. I highly doubt his stuff will.). Currently migration isn't added into pixelfed yet (its being worked on though) but I am gonna sign up to that one anyway, it's always best to spread around the federation.
Might be worth reaching out to lemmy.ca admins though and seeing if they have one spun up or would be willing to as well.
They are actually blocking links to fediverse based websites, especially lemmy. Some of the larger lemmy instances are having their links deleted and people posting them warned/banned
That sounds like a really good idea. Maybe expanding it as directory community kind of thing? A pinned post that's updated periodically that has a directory of currently known communities and new posts that notify new communities. That way it's easier to browse and navigate across instances.
It also doesn't help that the view of what Americans have on what is conservative and what Europe views as conservative is very different. American politics lean right by default, so when people tend to refer to conservatism in the US it is almost always referring to the far-right. If Joe Biden was a politician nearly anywhere in Western Europe, he would likely be seen at the very least as an economic conservative.
It depends on what you mean by conservative. If you're going by the American definition, then good luck as all of those have been mass defederated due to them nearly always turning into far right toxic harassment zones. If you are European though and go by their definition, you'll probably be fine. America leans very right by default. Democrats to a degree are skewed right wing at the very least economically.
Firefish is more tumblr-y, mastodon more twitter-y. Both are good, have their pros and cons. It's a matter of preference. Firefish is extremely easy to set up though, like ridiculously so.
