  • The fact that he was too scared to call out Trump by name in this "rebuke" suggests against that happening with Roberts

  • “For more than two centuries,” the chief justice said, “it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision. The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.”

    Translation: "Quit saying quiet parts out loud and get into my courtroom so I can rubber-stamp this and we can all go back to pretending this is a constitutional republic"

  • Eh, I wouldn't go quite that far, the judge may still be working towards doing the right thing here, I just think he's being more cautious and going slower than he needs to.

    If he gets this statement and says "OK, good, now that you have committed to one particular story in writing, here's how the facts and evidence show that story to be a lie and why I must find you in contempt of court and take appropriate actions" he's doing his job (albeit I would say overly meticulously, it should be obvious from the already established record they're acting with contempt of court).

    On the other hand, if he gets this statement and says "Well, if you promise this is the truth then I guess it is" then, yeah, this is all pointless bullshit.

  • Yeah, the strategy of invoking the court's authority to demand the administration submit a written statement formally declaring whether or not they have defied the court's authority seems like it has a bit of a weak point in it

  • Why did you come to a news focused community to tell us all that?

  • The Trump administration’s border czar, Tom Homan, has said “families can be deported together” regardless of status. Homan said it would be up to the parents to decide whether to depart the U.S. together or leave their children behind. In this case, the parents took their children with them so the family could stay together.

    That seems like a blame shifting assumption to me. Did they have a legal guardian set up for her with solid US residency before they were blindsided with all of this? Because it's not like they could just make one of those up on the spot, even if they had a person in mind unless that person already had filed and approved legal paperwork there would have been all sorts of options for government agents to take custody of her and send her off into CPS systems.

  • Can Tim Walz also cast all of his votes in the Senate and attend any hearings for him? Also, do all of his official press releases and conferences. Oh, and also walk his dog for him and be a father to Schumer's children for him. That should hopefully bring us down close to a tolerable amount of Chuck Schumer.

  • I don't know about that, think about what Schumer would be willing to do for the donors who laundered their normal bribes to him by picking up a couple dozen copies and getting him up the bestseller lists

Go read something from Amnesty International while you still can and think about your life choices.

  • Soon even citizenship won't be enough to stop people who ICE doesn't like the look of from getting deported, if it hasn't happened already.

    Does a ten year old citizen whose parents were undocumented getting thrown out of the US alongside her parents count? Because I saw a news story about that happening recently.

  • Well, based on recent experience with the budget bill anything that has any chance of succeeding is gonna be a no go with leadership anyway, so this might be the sort of thing they could get behind

  • I hate the idea of compromising at all on civil rights, but dropping the name "DEI" to let the segregationists feel like they got a win while just continuing to do all the same work under a different name is probably the best we can hope for from a for profit entity

  • FWIW, the vast majority of Democratic lawmakers didn't, House and Senate combined only 10 did. That being said, nine of those were in the Senate, which they knew was the only place where their votes possibly could have mattered.

    So, yeah, after this debacle any of them who don't start demanding Schumer be removed from his leadership positions are at least going to look like they only voted against this for show once they knew it had the votes to pass. I'm pretty sure they only need a majority of Dems to replace their caucus leader, so if everyone who voted against this budget was actually serious about it they'd have more than enough votes to publicly rebuke this shit in a convincing way.

    Same. FWIW, I felt totally alone when I was complaining about this stuff decades ago, now even the most moderate people I know will say things about Republicans that I wouldn't repeat on public forums.

    Step 2 will never come.

    Honestly, I don't know if you're right or not, but I do know that they will make it feel impossible right up until it actually happens, and I just don't think there's any better way forward than this (admittedly difficult) one
