Medical contractor with troubled history to leave Cleveland County jail

  • That's a smart buying strategy, but unless you're actually pulling out the antennas these subscription services use it won't be an effective security strategy

  • Yep, unless you get down to the level of pulling antennas off of circuit boards, but you'll probably have to be careful that that doesn't set off some sort of anti tampering system that shuts the whole car down

e; Also, doing these kinds of modifications are definitely going to violate your car warranty and maybe void your car insurance

Also also, any time you're messing around with electrical components there's a non-zero chance of electrocution or starting a fire, so in good conscience I can't say this is a realistically safe option that people should pursue (like, I wouldn't stop anyone from doing it, but I'm not encouraging it, just trying to highlight how completely fucked the situation is for consumers in the United States)

  • Can, probably yes, will, probably no

  • That comment you're replying to might not be a "I don't care about the pain and suffering of old people" so much as a "I don't like it when evil media companies exploit the pain and suffering of famous old people for click bait headlines," which I don't really agree with (talking about problems is how problems get fixed imo and bad elder care is a problem), but it's a take in good company (arc)

  • Most of the premium pollsters have fielded a poll to coincide with the 100 days milestone.

Also, I think this is all worth quoting,

The overarching argument is that public opinion doesn’t matter anymore because we’re no longer in the “normal” political space we’re used to.

This is categorically false, a basic misunderstanding of what politics even is.

... Politics doesn’t stop just because the President says it does or even when he’s in the midst of an attempted authoritarian takeover. Politics continues. Public opinion, if anything, becomes even more important. ...

    ...

Public opinion matters a lot because public opinion is the ultimate decider, especially when it becomes lopsided against the government. It encourages more people to express their opposition and it makes the would-be autocrat’s supporters doubt he is strong enough to protect them from electoral backlash or even to remain in power.

    ...

... The opposers are the majority, in some polls approaching 60% of the population. When people realize this, opposers become more likely to speak out, to take stands, to have confidence that they may in fact be on the winning side.

  • I think the failure of a lot of elected Democratic party members to offer a contrasting vision to the Republicans has been at least as harmful

Like, when the Republicans were out there saying "immigrants are killers who will eat your dog!" and Harris responded by promising to make it even tougher to apply for asylum and create new criminal penalties for people who just crossed the border it didn't make anyone think she was the reasonable compromise choice, it just made a lot of voters think "huh, the Republicans must have a point about these immigrants if even the bleeding heart liberals are ready to get tough on them."

  • That state judge was bailed out on her own recognizance within a few hours of being arrested, which had to require the federal court system her case landed in to move extra quickly, so I think they're calling the bluff and dodging punches alright

Of course, it's a fucking disgrace that nobody with the legal authority to do so is throwing any punches back or doing enough to help the people who don't have the social status judges do dodge the punches this administration is throwing at them, but I think at least judges are going to try to protect each other and the power of the judiciary in general

  • That tracks with polls I've seen showing low approval rates for the media

  • There was a different AP/NORC poll (arc) released the same day that showed this basic dynamic but with the partisan ratios even more out of whack

  • Almost as stupid as Gavin Newsom saying deportations were a distraction from tariffs and Dems shouldn't talk about them because Republicans were strong on that issue

  • Biden's DOJ: People will respect us for being non-partisan

People: See, if Trump did any real crimes he'd be in prison but he's not because Biden's DOJ was just playing politics

  • Off the top of my head - she said she's more than "just an AOC," said Rashida Tlaib was supporting terrorism when Tlaib asked the Biden administration to stop funding Israel, said multiple times in interviews that the Green New Deal could never pass because it had controversial ideas like universal healthcare, said multiple times in interviews in 2020 during the height of the George Floyd protests that she would never ever support defunding the police, and on and on. She constantly signal boosts Republican talking points about progressive lawmakers and progressive policy ideas to tear them down and only then turns around and says "Hey Michigan, if you don't want to deal with a Republican party that went completely insane around 2020* I guess you're stuck with me!"

*I forget the exact details, but MAGAts purged their party's leadership for some "say the quiet parts through megaphones" types and then there was some sort of scandal with their finances, so MIGOP has been a barely functional shell of itself for a few years now

  • And if this article is the first you're hearing Slotkin's name (like apparently a lot of people in here who are defending this piece of shit for some reason), you should know she's a massive piece of shit whose whole brand is whining about whatever progressives are doing or saying. If AOC had gone on a "No Kings" tour Slotkin would be saying that she's alienating people who think the British royal family are cute or whatever.

  • The US federal government just abducted a member of the Wisconsin judiciary who was duly elected by their voters under the normal process that state has used for decades. If we didn't have this whole Constitution thing binding us together (which, like, do we still have that thing?) everyone would call that an act of war.

  • Yeah, I mean among other things once ICE kidnapped this guy there was no way she was going to be able to finish holding a proper trial on the charges that actually brought him there, so she just took a series of fully legal steps (i.e. she's allowed to access that private hallway and grant other people access to it) to protect the judicial process of her trial same as any judge should want to do.

I think in light of this development it's now perfectly reasonable for judges to just instantly order the arrest of any ICE agents that show up to their court rooms on a charge of attempted justice obstruction. Put them in a jail cell and make them defend their actions and intentions before they do that to you, nothing less is going to be sufficient for protecting the orderly process of trials from ICE's obstruction.
