  • In windows you're not sending the signal directly through another port. You're sending the dGPU's signal through the iGPU to get to the port.

On a laptop with nvidia optimus or AMD's equivalent you can see the increased iGPU usage even though the dGPU is doing the heavy lifting. it's about 30% usage on my 11th gen i9's iGPU routing the 3080s video out to my 4k display.

  • In terms of what matters for compatibility 12th and 13th gen are largely the same, just a better P core. iGPU is identical, chipsets are largely the same etc. 14th gen almost certainly will post a problem, but 13th gen is a nice step up.

Alternatively just pay a lot less for the machine. I'm surprised best buy has the balls to list it for that much without any discounts. With 14th gen rolling out I'd hope prices will tank on those machines, if not new then used they're getting close to the 3 year mark and their value will plummet.

  • XPS machine are generally pretty well built machines. But 1300 for a 12th gen machine right after 14th gen has just come out?

I don't think Dell has 14th gen based XPS 13 yet but I wouldn't pay MSRP for a machine with a 2 year old CPU. I'm sure you can find it for a lot less elsewhere.

  • Most nice modern cameras have either USB, bluetooth, or even wifi connectivity to connect to whatever you want. You could just have a normal phone and a normal camera and just copy the files off via whatever method you prefer.

  • What OS are you planning on running? I personally use FreeNAS(TrueNAS) and largely love it. There's a steep initial learning curve, but it's not too high.

I run it in a VM inside of esxi so I don't need a lot of it's more advanced features. But I do have a jail with deluge in it to handle my torrents. Deluge isn't up to the task though so I may migrate to a separate VM with something else, or just make a new jail with a different client.

  • People already post the most racist, hate inducing, vitriolic shit on facebook with their name and life history attached to it.

It might reduce some low effort trolling, but I don't think it will affect much.

  • Have you ever tried garmin watches? They're not as "smart" as the Apple Watch or Android wear. But they have battery life measured from weeks to months, and have a lot longer of a lifespan than the smarter ones.

They're by far more focused on fitness tracking though, so if a regular watch is an option then they're probably the opposite of what you're into.

  • and know they’d feel guilty or embarrassed about receiving money directly

That's what I never understood about the taboo of cash as gifts. Whats weirder to me is it's pretty common to get straight cash money as a gift for graduating from highschool, but not for christmas or birthdays?

I personally dislike feeling the obligation to buy something from a specific store because of the gift cards. Getting cash (or not spending money on gifts) gives me more flexibility. And if I ever need the cash I don't feel obligated to lose money in a transaction having to sell some item off. Whether it be the item I bought with the gift card, or some other item I bought so I can keep that other item.

  • My wife and I don’t really buy each other gifts anymore. We just buy ourselves something we want and say, “This is my Christmas gift from you!” Repeat for birthdays, etc.

This is what I prefer. Instead of getting a gift card and feeling obliged to buy something from X retailer. Sometimes I just don't want to buy something from them. Whether it's cheaper elsewhere, or I just don't trust them for that item so I either have to pay more just to use the gift card, or risk getting a knockoff.

With straight cash money I can spend it whenever I want, on whatever I want, wherever I want.

  • Regex101 is amazing. It tends to balk at backtracing which we rely on a lot for work, but it's such a good visual.

Chat GPT can also save a lot of time writing regex, but it tends to write very unreadable regex because it thinks it's being clever when it really isnt.

Regex is an art form, and writing readable regex is another step above that.

  • Maybe they do it differently on ideapads. But on all of the modern thinkpads I own the all install at set up the same power profiles and dynamic tuning that the factory image does. Factory install vs fresh install performance is the same on these machines once windows update has done it's thing. Even the random POS HPs will do the same thing.

    Older machines yes absolutely.
