Cutaneous Leishmaniosis at two places, one being.my face over the upper lip. I was happy.I got treatment instead of bad scars.

  • In huge parts of the world these are standardized and readable as well - where Vienna Convention signs are being used. (Those with have more pictograms).

Detours are also labelled by standard signs in a pre-determined font with a specific reflectivity. Easy for a car to recognize.

And even without text recognition is one of the really easy parts of self driving. I've done development on document recognition for random bank statements, builinng plans and legal documents - all the paperwork for financing a house - before. Those documents come in in various fonts, layouts differently formatted etc.

  • Wow, you solved one of the really easy self driving problems (sign recognizion) with a more complicated solution.

Sign recognition and traffic light recognition are available in a lot of cars. Detecting that the dark lump on the road is just a shadow and not slamming the brakes automatically is the hard part.

Or that the white sky is in fact not a white sky but the sideways view of a semi trailer.

(The latter issue is why relying on multiple sensors camera+radar+ultrasound in the case of my car's emergency brake system and drive assistant is always a lot better - each sensor on its own has its failure modes)

  • Mercedes has Level 3 autonomy in certain highway situations, so you are legally allowed to watch a video or read a newspaper. You just need to be able to take over again within 20 seconds or so.

Others are following close up, I think Audi had to postpone Level 3 a bit etc. BMW has something in the pipeline as well.

But these are really more than drive assists. I really find the "Level n" specifications more helpful than "drive assist" vs "autonomy"

None of the other brands oversell what they are offering.

  • I remember when I felt an atomic bomb amount of gas rumbling through my intestines in school. I was sitting in front row at class, and during that lesson the guy behind me typically was close to be asleep.

So I let it rip as loud as I could, turned around and shouted loudly "You fucking pig!"

Confused he woke up while everyone else was shouting at him.

Sorry, S. if I caused you trauma.

  • I gave my kids completely open internet access and just chose to talk with them on what they might encounter. If I'd locked their devices, they'd just went online at a friend's place.

  • Ah ok - if the gas station doesn't have such a machine that's pretty useful. My next gas station has such a compressor, I enter the pressure and it does everything automatically once the hose is connected.

Anyways, keeping your tires at correct pressure probably pays for such a pump in a short time.

  • Of course he knows, don't think these people are stupid. Still it limited the amount of news about the Facebook Papers by giving the press something else to write about. This post proves it even more.

And yet in the long run, they can make the name Meta stick, just by behaving like the renaming was a huge success and just ignoring everyone who calls the whole company Facebook.

If you like it or not over time Facebook will be just one of their brands, also probably not even the most attractive one.

  • I only drink carbonated water. Tbh when I'm home alone it is soooo satifying to burp after drinking it.

Regarding flat water - if I drink a lot of it quickly my stomach feels reaaaaly stange.

Oh and one more fun fact: The biggest water resources on the earth, the oceans, lakes, rivers, even the rain are not carbonated.

So technically the world is flat.

  • I'm still not convinced we really are fundamentally different from such engines - still more complex maybe, so we're harboring consciousness or an illusion of it - but in the end not so much different.

Specifically the creativity discussion strikes me as mad, as I think also human creativity is just the reproduction of things our minds have taken in before, processed by the neuronal meat grinder.
