wow thanks, I always remembering hearing people talk about passphrases being better, and saw bitwarden add a feature to generate them, I just went with it.
But given I have no interest in remembering these pass phrases, it would make sense to use generated passwords vs passphrases as you said. Good thing my effort to transition to pass phrases was recent and wasn't done too much yet.
something I did before letting bitwarden take over my passwords, was using a phrase consisting of 2-3 words + a series of numbers and special characters. Safer than anyone I knew at the time's passwords. Admittedly it was not the most secure, as i only changed the beginning part of the 2-3 word phrase, and left the last word, numbers and symbols the same. So if one of those passwords were breached, it wouldn't be too difficult for AI to brute force the missing pieces. So yeah I don't do that anymore.
Wow thank you for the detailed response. After reading through it i think I agree with raid 10 being my best option. Gonna start reading into it more and how to set it up! These hard drives aren’t new so being safe against at least one drive failure sounds safe. Can easily replace one if it goes out. Hopefully 2 don’t go out at the same time but it looks like I potentially will still be safe if so.
RAID is something I haven’t learned yet but really should.
My server has 4 4TB hard drives. Sounds like I could do RAID10 and only have 4TB of storage. Or RAID5 and 8TB?
Right now I have no raid. 1/4 of my hard drives has about 700GB of data and is movie and shows. 2/4 hard drive has 91GB and is photos and cloud data. 3/4 is blank and 4/4 is borg backups from my desktop and server and second hard drive currently at 120GB. My media drive has no backups right now and is not really being used.
It sounds like I could put all of my data on hard drive 1 which will only be about 1TB and then have RAID so that data is secure.
I would like having 8TB storage with raid 5. But maybe raid 10 is smarter and if I want more storage I’ll have to get more drives.
Back in like 2011 I was living out of state for college. Had decided to drop out at the time so had limitless free time for a bit. I definitely used that time to compile my own kernel and setup gentoo lol. I haven’t played with gentoo since but it was fun and helped my appreciation for Linux.
From what I can see they are totally different finance apps. Actual is basically YNAB. Where firefly is not much of a budget tool more of a finance manager. I stopped using firefly for now but still using actual. As soon as they finish work on bank linking I think it’s going to be the perfect zero budgeting tool
Yeah my big issue is the software we use is all windows based. I don’t even technically need to use my work laptop to do most my work so I considering just a windows VM on my desktop
I officially switched my desktop and server to Linux. If I could switch my work computer I would. I bought a MacBook Air recently because I didn’t know Linux laptops were getting so popular. But I like the Mac and can still do some Linux like stuff in the terminal.
Hey it can work out for you. As people say you have to make it happen. I decided to go the non college route (totally not because I got put on academic suspension due to my at the time undiagnosed ADHD) and worked in call centers for 10 years slowly working my way up and hopping jobs. I now get paid a comfortable salary for my girlfriend and I and our 3 pets. I choose my own hours and my own workload. Awesome work life balance. It is possible but doesn’t mean it will be easy.

Ohhh yeah we definitely are. I think what you are referring to is like snapshot backups I think. Which you are right I don’t believe rsync can do that without some major tweaking.

I haven’t tried it on Nextcloud yet but I do this already on home assistant with my girlfriend and I. We can basically replicate the iOS find my app with it.
Oh cool. I am using KitchenOwl and someone else on this post suggested a few recipe managers. I’ll definitely check out clementines (if I get it working haha)
For memos I never realized it doesn’t work offline. Thankfully it’s rare I am offline but that does worry me that when it does happen I won’t have access to my notes. I’ll definitely take a look at silver bullet!
Version control of docker compose files why the heck didn’t I think of that before lol. Would have helped me more than a few times. Going to get that setup as well.
Makes sense. I think I did use sync thing years ago when I was on android. Thankfully the only issues I’ve had with Nextcloud have been user error.
I haven’t got deep into using both yet but from what I’ve seen so far they are very different.
Actual is basically YNAB so if you’ve used that before you’ll be familiar with it. I am a current subscriber to YNAB and considering fully switching over to Actual.
Firefly iii is like an accounting program to manage all your finances and less about budget categories and giving every dollar a job. I personally don’t see my self using this much.
I am using KitchenOwl right now for recipe management. I haven’t gotten deep into it yet and I am intrigued to try something different. There was another one I was looking at that hadn’t been updated in a while so I just settled on KitchenOwl I’ll check those others out ! Which one is your preference?
