  • Currently have a Volkswagen and in comparison to the Tesla app/car infotainment:

    • VW infotainment is laggy
    • VW can't remote lock/unlock
    • VW doesn't have the ability to use the car cameras as dashcam
    • VW app can't connect to my car half the time because the 12v battery is too low
    • VW car lock/unlock when you approach/leave doesn't work half the time because either the 12v battery is empty ( because it's been parked for 2 days ) or because the car is in some kind of deep sleep.
    • sometimes the Spotify app just doesn't work and I'd need to reboot the car.
    • android car tries to steal control all the fucking time. Can't use android car and use the Spotify app in the car. Nope, need to use the Spotify through android car. They want 15€ a month, but 90% of the features just don't work once you hook the car up to android car.

I asked about it in a dealership ( the 12v battery ) and they say it's probably not even related to the 12v battery. The app can't connect to the car sometimes when it's attached to a fucking charging point.

I'm not unhappy with the VW car, but the software compared to the Tesla is wildly underwhelming in that regard. Tesla I could just walk up to the car, get in, and leave. With the VW the car only starts waking up the moment you get in the car. You can stand next to it talking for 20mins and once you get in the infotainment still needs to fucking boot. It doesn't take long, but it is annoying ( to me ).

Build quality, comfort, ... the VW is miles ahead of tesla. But software-wise I feel they are still lagging behind. It also feels like the compute power in their id5 ( based on a rental I drove around for 3 months ) is some cheap tablet you get for free with a subscription to a magazine which is very disappointing considering the car costs 50k.

I agree that the Tesla software feels pretty mature and stable ( infotainment/app ).

Note: wouldn't buy a Tesla either or trade in this VW for one.

Source: drove around a Tesla company car for a while

I have no experience with other brands besides the VW and the Tesla.

  • Geolocation is an accurate way to predict the user’s language.

This makes me so angry. It really really really really really does.

Despite setting everything to English I still get my receipts in French. And all because my IP is CG-NAT to the capital which is marked as french speaking.

What is so hard about letting me decide. The absolute fucking arrogance thinking you as a company know better than me in which language I would like to be served.

    Eat a dick Microsoft.

  • It's kind of like Instagram, but it picks a random moment during the day for you to take a picture. ( When you're awake normally ).

When the app goes off you have 1 minute to take a picture. If you miss it you can't post a picture anymore.

It's a bit of a reaction against the perfect pictures you see everywhere and people having amazing lives all the time. You'll see pictures in your feed from friends/family just chilling in front of tv. Sometimes it'll be nice timing ( oh wow! Just when we're at

    <beautiful place>

and other times it'll be when you're having a movie night with your SO.

I say friends/family because AFAIK you need to be friends with somebody to able to see their posts.

  • Yes. It's not running anymore. But the entry lingered in the startup section ( for whatever reason ).

I've also had a case where starting my Mac gave me "file cannot be found" notification, and that was also related to software that was removed. Running a cleanup tool removed entries I couldn't remove myself (ui) and the error disappeared.

  • The uninstall on a Mac just leaves a ton of garbage behind though. Dragging an app to the trashcan to uninstall is somewhat intuitive, but doesn't remove the app from startup. Which is a bit messy because then I need to install software to clean that up.

Windows isn't necessarily a lot better on that front, but it feels better ( the cleanup part )

  • I mean. For the majority geo blocking off anything except their main region would be fine ( whitelisting Europe for Europeans will be fine for the most part ). Especially if you make it opt-in rather than opt-out.

Though I assume they would likely just continue their hack attempts over VPNs.

  • Yeah I have an old email as well. I rarely log into it, but when I did I saw there are daily attempts from China and whatnot trying to log into it.

Not in the situation where the account is locked out though. I always wondered if you couldn't reach out to m$ and ask for a geo block at the least.

  • I have good experiences with both bazzite and nobara.

Bazzite is an immutable OS though. So installing additional packages requires you layering them on top. It works differently than the traditional OS. Though if you just use it for gaming and browsing you'll likely never notice the difference.

Garuda also markets itself as a mainly gaming distro. I don't have any real experience with that. I tried it, but it didn't feel like it was for me.

I've happily used the former two though.
