It's really not the Democrats' fault.

Democrats have not had true, fillibuster-proof control of Congress since the late 1970s.

For about seven months in 2009-10 they had something pretty close to that if you count the independents who caucused with them, but they also had the traitor, Joe Lieberman who ruined Democrats' one chance to get a public option for healthcare.

Yeah, that would have been a great strategy had we started it 30 years ago.

As it is the only way to repair this court in our lifetime is an overwhelming democratic sweep of the Senate, (and winning the presidency) and then massively restructuring the court to add enough new seats to get control back into the hands of the majority of Americans, and our of the hands of those corrupt, bigoted theocrats.

Sure, faith in the Supreme Court is down, but that's only because the court is dominated by judges who were appointed by presidents who lost the popular vote and didn't represent the values of the majority of Americans.

... Well, that and the fact that the conservative justices on the court openly lied about their positions on important issues.

... Or is it just that many of us are still pretty fucking outraged that they stepped in and gave the presidency to George W. Bush, who lost both the popular vote, and would have lost the electoral college vote, too under ANY AND ALL of the proposed ballot counting measures in Florida, had the court actually... You know... Not forbidden them from counting them.

... Of course it might also be a little bit about the fact that Republicans rigged the judicial appointment system to block a Democratic nominee a year from the end of Obama's term on the grounds that it was too close to an election, and rushed Trump's nominee mere weeks from an election, in the most nakedly hypocritical moment in Senate history.

...Then again, maybe it's just because the conservatives on this court have turned the court from an institution that protects the citizens and safeguards rights into an institution which strips rights away.

... Or perhaps it's just that they've thrown away any attempt to even pretend to be a serious judicial institution when they did away with the entire doctrine of standing when it suited their ideological purposes.

... Or maybe it's their use of the Shadow Docket to massively alter the laws of the land with quick, secret rulings with little deliberation or explanation, and which they don't even sign their name to.

Or, maybe it's just the tiny, tiny issue that they have been caught red-handed taking bribes in exchange for their votes.

Or, no... Could it be that AFTER being caught doing this, they have absolutely refused to step down, and refused to regulate themselves in any way, and ludicrously declared that even Congress can't regulate them?

Any of those things?

Republicans WANT government shutdowns.

They have become the Burn-It-All-Down party. They don't have any actually principles.(at least none that they can talk about without their hoods on) Remember they didn't even bother having a party platform in the last election.

They want the spectacle. They have zero empathy for all the people they are hurting. This is all about energizing the base.

If you don't think that every single Republican wishes the insurrection had succeeded, you simply don't understand them.

They want a Trump dictatorship. They want to own the libs. They have open plans to gut the federal government and replace all the NONPARTISAN professionals with unqualified, Trump-worshipping zombies.

A government shutdown is nothing to them. Nothing.

I live in a super liberal town, and EVERYONE was pouring into the streets. It was an impromptu parade, basically. It felt like we just won war.

Republicans for 50 years: "abortion should be left to the states to decide!!!"

Republicans the instant they get power: "we're going to force our minority opinion on EVERYONE in every state. We're taking away the rights of ALL women."

The problem is this:

At the end of the day, Democrats actually care about people. When the government is shut down, and people are unable to get their paychecks or have access to essential services, Democrats feel empathy towards them, and also want to live up to the oaths they took to serve those people.

Meanwhile, the Republicans could not give less of a shit about those people or about their oaths.

Republicans have shown us that they will quite LITERALLY destroy our democracy in order to strengthen their grip on power. If the Democrats weren't the grown-ups in this situation, it actually wouldn't end.

Unfortunately, the people who can and will read this article already know that.

And the people who need to know it will never read it, nor would they believe it.

There's no paradox. She was a liberal who got old and lost touch.

This is the chronic wasting disease that infects the Democratic party. It's a bunch of well-meaning Boomers who simply cannot comprehend that the working young people today have it muuuuuuch harder than they ever did.

We're drowning and they are debating whether to give us a $10 coupon for swimming lessons.

But don't you dare vote for a Republican. They are the ones who shoved us in the pool, and are pissing into it.

Morons.

No. There are always more morons.

... We'll see. There's a lot of anti-American MAGAts in law enforcement and paramilitary organizations.

We have an infestation of Republican fascists, and no one can say how that's going to play out over the next couple of years.

If Republicans weren't the most disgustingly dishonest people on the planet, that would mean something.

They didn't last time.

Trump and the Senate Republicans caused the longest shutdown in history. They did it because Trump was having a temper tantrum over the fact that Democrats refuse to fund his idiotic border wall.

I don't see a wall. Do you?

No. It's because the Democrats held their ground.

Republicans are going to try to blame Biden for this. Not that they care about facts or reality, but two things to remember:

1. They rejected the BIPARTISAN Senate solution to this current shutdown.
2. The last government shutdown was the longest in our country's, when Trump was President, and Republicans controlled the Senate. Trump was very happy to shut down the government. He was having a temper tantrum because he couldn't get funding for his idiotic border wall.

The Republicans aren't trying to win a budget war.

The Republicans have ZERO interest in governing. What they want is power, and to hurt their enemies.

They have no core principles. Remember that they ran with NO PARTY PLATFORM? Have you seen their presidential debates? They don't have even the slightest understanding of reality. They are the dumbest, cruelest people ever.

Republicans are a cancer.

He was always a moron, from a very young age. If his daddy hadn't given him money, Trump would be nowhere. He'd be the dumbest, laziest guy in some prison somewhere as a repeat offender with a history of fraud.

5 misdemeanors? This guy flipped on Trump for a sweet deal.

If storming the capital gets your 3 months, then exposing Trump's fraud should get you... A medal of honor?

Remember, as awful as she was, there are 49 Republican senators who are infinitely worse.

Sure, but night owls have more fun.
