"Gunk" is probably a combination of algae sludge plus any captured lint from the ventilation. Not much to do about the algae other than blast it with a disinfectant like bleach once in a while.

This is why internet download manager (and other, similar download manager softwares) were originally created. Download managers track the amount of a file you've downloaded and will repeatedly retry when interrupted without restarting from zero.

Everything was "direct download". That's exactly how I know. Made some very nice interior car parts and experimented with the 3 plastics. PLA failed in a day, PETG made it a week before it sagged too much to be usable, but ABS is still going.

Well at least it's recyclable.
