  • From the article:

One sore point is the notorious 1995 R.J. Reynolds effort called Project SCUM (Sub-Culture Urban Marketing) campaign, which was aimed at selling more cigarettes in San Francisco’s Castro district, a largely gay neighborhood, and in the low-income Tenderloin district.

That naming is like anime villain levels of exposition jfc.

  • Sure, to an extent. ActivityPub is an independent protocol not controlled by lemmy or any lemmy devs, so there’s a layer of protection there. This is also a trick that can only be pulled once, because any other instances would likely defederate in response and ML would render itself irreparably untrustworthy. I don’t mean to downplay your concerns as they are valid, but I also don’t think it’s an existential threat.

  • I don’t agree with the “hiding the problem” notion because different instances are independently operated, and defederation is the by-design way to “fix” malignant instances (see the LW defed of hexbear and lemmygrad for exactly this kind of behavior).

As for the whole system not being safe, I’d also disagree on that point as the entire lemmy server code is licensed under a copyleft license which allows anyone with a copy of the code to modify and distribute it. Ergo, hard forking lemmy is possible. Based on the github page, over 800 individuals already have forks of the server code. Any one of them, group of them, or some other individuals entirely, could pick up lemmy development and run with it if need be.

  • As you say OP, the solution here is to use the fediverse model as intended and use different instances/communities. It sucks because it fragments the community, but that’s the way it is. I’ve long held the opinion that I’m grateful to the lemmy developers for building this whole thing that we all get to enjoy, but their approach to administering an instance is reprehensible and actively damaging to the relatively free and open exchange of ideas that should happen on the fediverse.

  • Fair points all around, except I can’t say the “acknowledging it” part has matched my experience. As I’ve seen it, they seem to be more content to shove their heads in the sand and pretend FPTP isn’t real and that the system isn’t set up to keep anyone without a [D] or [R] nomination from being electorally viable. Like, I tend to be very laissez-faire with political discussions if people aren’t using hate speech or blatantly acting in bad faith, but that crowd always has me teetering on the edge of reporting their comments for spreading misinformation.

  • Haley literally sharpied the words “finish them” on materiel being sent to Israel. Anyone swearing off Biden over his Israel policy is sure as shit not gonna support Haley. Or who knows, maybe they would, I think a third of them are cosplaying, another third accelerationists, and the remaining third severely misguided idealists.

  • I’m being cautiously optimistic here, but I have to admit prison time is probably a long shot. Justice Merchan didn’t want to jail him on his ten instances of contempt, and I can understand wanting to avoid politicizing an already unprecedented trial and handing the defense reason for appeal. Given convicted felon Donald Trump’s behavior however, my personal prediction is something like house arrest and possibly a supervised release schedule. Total bullshit, but I do think Merchan has been playing the long game so that whatever sentence he hands down is airtight and holds up under appeal.

  • Yeah.. I’ve heard a lot of voters in deep red districts do what the second one does. Granted, never met any myself so this is hearsay, but it does make sense. If your only realistic influence is to bolster the least bad candidate in local/state/federal elections, you’re practicing harm reduction by doing so.

  • “… I'm apologizing for you, Kyle Clark, for getting video and releasing that and people seeing it in a very private moment.”

lmfao.. these dipshits always try the uno reverse “no u” response and it literally never works. Reminds me of when MTG told a BBC reporter “you’re a conspiracy theorist”, cursed her out, and then stormed off. Boebert is just the pathetic screeching version of this instead of the roid rage version.

  • Sounds like reddit. They started banning blocks of VPN IPs after they locked down their API (presumably to prevent screen scraping). If you really want to visit, proton stealth protocol is able to get through sometimes, and old.reddit seems to get through all of the time.

  • How could Biden be so utterly selfish.. if his administration successfully helps negotiate a permanent ceasefire, then what are all the single issue voters going to have to hold over him? Can’t someone think of their self-righteousness? Oh the humanity! /s
