  • I think a lot of your post is spot on but one thing I do disagree with you on:

Meta doesn't do anything "for fun" it does everything for profit. If their exec board thought that promoting well-being and good mental health was more profitable, meta would do that instead of the other shit you talk about. A minor nitpick of your post but I think it's always worth bearing in mind that companies like meta are singularly motivated by greed.

  • Why is "removed" getting redacted for me? Is it lemmy.ml lemmy.world or is it my client!? Whichever one of them is guilty of it is getting canned...I do not need mothering.

Okay that's a lie, I do need mothering, but I dont want to be molly codled in regards to obscene language.

  • If only there was some kind of universal communication technology that didn't require line of sight, worked over distances out to say 100m and was reasonably inexpensive to implement...then we wouldn't need to communicate using the modern equivalent of semaphore.

  • Why do you say that? It's your kind of response that makes me scared to expose my ignorance through fear of being mischaracterised as hateful. So I just live in ignorance, keep my head down and don't learn about other people's perspectives. I'm pretty confident I don't offend anyone...but mostly because I avoid any conversation that involves anything even remotely in this sphear just to ensure I don't accidentally cause offence.

  • Hope this isn't an offensive question to ask - but what do you mean by "how I feel"?

Because, by example, I am a man. I know this because I have the reproductive organs of a man. I am "more manly" than some men, and "less manly" than some other men. But I am a man, regardless of how I feel, dress, act or look.

In my current understanding of gender, being gender fluid would require the hot swapping of your reproductive organs.

So - genuinely (if you want to...) - can you help me understand what you mean by what you said? Perhaps I can become less ignorant without exposing my ignorance to the real world.

  • When you say they're born with the "wrong sex" do you mean they have chromosomes commonly associated with one gender, but have the genitalia of another?

I'm sensitive to hurting people's feelings on this issue so just stear clear of ever asking questions or stating opinion on it - plus I'm hardly qualified for the latter. Sadly the side effect of this is that I am completely ignorant. Even more sad: I'd rather be ignorant than a pariah. Too many people getting ostracised for being ignorant.

  • This isn't about your guns. It's about guns.

This isn't about you. It's about us.

It's such an absurd argument to equate guns with freedom - most free people live without them just fine.

Why is it that not allowing you to own certain types of guns is an infringement on your freedom, yet the ability to drink alcohol before 21, or buy a manpad, or inject heroin into your veins not an equal violation of your freedom?

  • That's not what I said, it isn't 25% of all emissions, and I didn't say it wasn't worth it. I pointed out that the deaths from lack of cars without a plan would outweigh the lives saved by removing cars.

It absolutely is worth finding a way to remove cars in their current form. There are also far more effective things we can do, like eat less meat.

  • My comment wasn't meant to suggest someone was making that argument - I was just setting the premise for my question.

I dont know why my genuine curiosity has triggered so many people...I was hoping for some rational suggestions that I could incorporate into my lifestyle.

As for going back to what it was like 70 years ago....I find it unlikely. There are a lot more people on the planet than there were back then and prosperity is broadly increasing...in reality we'll transition to more sustainable and healthy living which I think entails better urban planning and greater government action on pollution.

  • Awesome thanks for the write up! The headphones I'm replacing are XM3 but I've had them over 5 years now I think and they're showing their age (just aesthetically as the cushions are starting to crack, and flaking isn't far away imo) so I suspect I'll go for the XM5 as I've been really happy with these.

For gaming I think I'll stick with steelseries (assuming they still have a model that does replaceable batteries) as I always forget to charge stuff so the base station charging the spare has been awesome.

    Thanks again!

  • I'm also in the market for new headphones! Wireless. I currently have a pair for gaming and a pair for music/travelling. It's critical the travelling pair have outrageously good sound cancelling. Both must have a mic. Unlimited budget.

    Have at thee!

  • What would you use in place of cars?

Obviously just outlawing cars tomorrow would cause mass deaths around the world as society isn't equipped to deal with it, so what could we transition to?

My assumption is that you'd suggest public transport for all? But that wouldn't save us, as only about 1/4 of transport emissions come from cars, it'd just make us die a little slower.

Edit: if the next 5 people to downvote this could leave a reply it'd be appreciated. I try my best to do my bit for the environment but I depend on my car to participate in my local community given, and so I'd like to know what the ideal solution is? What should I be asking my representative to be voting for?
