  • I think a lot of people didn't hear about this guy until about 2 days ago. Personally I didn't even know about this petition.

I knew about the lawsuit against The Crew, but I didn't know anything about any more general petition, so I think the greater problem was simply a lack of advertising.

  • I can't tell if you're serious or not.

If the internet is down then I don't have access to the app store. Also if the internet's down then the data is going to be out of date almost immediately anyway so any cached version would be useless.

  • How would a novice programmer even know if the code that they're writing isn't breaking something else?

I've tried getting AI to program really simple things, like converting street addresses into latitude and longitude coordinates, and the code it produces is just awful.

It's not ready at all for primetime yet, I really wish people would stop pushing it. It'll get there I'm sure but it needs more time.

  • I'm not surprised it got a bad answer though. The government was completely dysfunctional by that point (and had been well over a year), I wouldn't be surprised if it was just some random civil servant who was just told to weave a fig leaf at it.

  • Federation is an overly complicated solution it's not required. It also wouldn't actually help, they can still take it off the app store there'd be another one but they would just play whack-a-mole and you can achieve the same thing with open source.

The best bet would be to have the database hosted outside the US and just have apps that pull the data from an API. There's no need for the app itself to store the data in fact that's a really stupid way to do it. You could federate it if you wanted but honestly that's probably unnecessary

  • There was somebody else who works at the company I work at with the same name as me. I will often see my boss typing a message and it goes on for a very long time and then suddenly stops, that's when I realise that right at the last minute she's realised she's messaging the wrong person.

I cannot say I find the experience overly distressing.

  • So it's just an amp version of the gov.uk website? I assume so because after reading the article I'm no clearer on what the point of this app is actually supposed to be. Apparently I can customise it, a feature that I've got to be honest I've never felt was missing from the website.

I actually think the gov.uk website is really quite good. Certainly a lot easier than it used to be with all of the services and departments having their own website, I've never really felt an app is necessary.

  • I don't think I have ever seen a taxi driver operate their vehicle for more than about 60 seconds without committing a driving violation.

It's like they think that it's their job to drive stupidly. But the absolute worst is the way they park, they just stop the car in the middle of the damn road. But it's all right because they've turned on their hazards.

  • such as a quick look at the sat nav, neglecting to signal, or any short-lived distraction – might result in prosecution and a driving disqualification.

I hate people that don't indicate. Especially on roundabouts because now I have to wait for them to decide what they're doing. How hard is it to flick a switch?

Anyway I already thought these things were driving violations, I don't understand what's different are they just now enforcing the rule?

  • Well no they discourage fast driving, and discouraging fast driving means there are less fast drivers, and therefore accidents are less likely.

I don't understand why people feel the need to drive fast anyway, it hardly has any effect on your arrival time unless you're travelling literally 200 yd.

If you're going to drive at 40 in a 20 then frankly I have no sympathy, you're an asshole and you deserve to be taken to the cleaners.
