  • I don't know how you've managed it but you've managed to invent toxic-domestication, The idea that someone's life can't be worth living unless they are working. I don't know maybe you're young but when you get to your 40s you begin to realise that actually what you really want out of life is just to be left alone, you really aren't craving notoriety. If you can just sit in the hobby room and build airfix models or whatever then go to the pub, for the next 40 years you'd be happy.

I really don't know why you're arguing about this because there have been actual experiments where people have been given UBI and pretty much everyone ends up just going and doing their own stuff. I've never heard of anyone complaining about being given free money.

  • I was a kid in high school just around the time that laptops were becoming available to the general public, somehow my parents actually managed to convince the school to buy me one. The one I had you could use to beat people to death, I certainly use mine as a weapon. We need to go back to that, I'm not interested in having an ultra thin laptop, I want a huge chunk of metal and plastic that I can use for self-defense.

  • Okay let's do an experiment.

Get some annoying trust fund kid, take all their money away from them, and tell them that they now have to get a job but it's a good thing because now their life has meaning. Let's see how happy they are about it.

  • What's wrong with AI summaries?

It never stops there though, they never just write their summary and leave it alone they always have to have the AI do more and more until it eventually takes over the entire platform.

  • James bond movies have always predicted the future to a certain extent. In car GPS, Self-Driving vehicles, really sharp hats, the media's abuse of power for political gain, obnoxious tech Bros building mansions in stupid places.

  • I thought they did invent a steam engine at some point. I'm sure I read that somewhere.

The thing is they were never going to invent the steam engine because they didn't have the technology to produce steel to the quality and strength that would be needed to build rails. And for that matter they didn't really have the metallurgy necessary to construct reliable boilers either.

  • During the pandemic our office was inspected and structurally condemned, so we literally have nowhere to go back to, the building is now a car park. It's great.

I wholeheartedly recommend black mould and a leaky roof to anyone that doesn't want to go back, it might be hard to arrange but it definitely works.

  • I used to work for a bunch of lawyers. I would happily take a fire axe to every single one of them.

They really didn't like remote working and tried to put a stop to it and "sense of community" was their excuse as well, but it was really about control.

It would be interesting if they did this study again in an environment like that, where people aren't really friendly with their co-workers. I imagine they would get a vastly different result.

This study may not be BS in particular, for that one case, but it is BS in general

  • Or if we use less adversarial language, this study is far from universal and its findings should be applied with the understanding that not all people will not match those who were in the study. As with most things, far more research is needed to get a thorough understanding.

  • I actually don't like my coworkers very much I definitely wouldn't hang out with them so not having to be near them all day is a benefit.

It's not even that they are bad people, it's just that they are people who I wouldn't choose to hang out with.
