You should check out "The Magicians". I won't spoil it (though I guess even recommending it in this thread kind of does) but it does NOT follow this trope. At least mostly...

My thought was more that one side of the mini laptop has a keyboard and the other a track pad. You kind of need to be able to use both at once and the screen is typically at one end, not in the center. It sitting on a keyboard is weird but also works for showing the scale so looks cool.

Yes. They're called proxies. Some people are fine with it, some aren't. It's not legal in tournaments obviously but some communities/syles like CEDH are fine with it.
