It’s literally that most VWs get pretty mediocre reliability and maintenance scores at least in the US. There are certainly very reliable VW models of certain years, and people certainly get good examples of a model that will just go be forever but also… there are a LOT of duds. At the end of the day it just comes down to the fact that German car makers (as well as American of course) can’t really hold a candle to a basic Honda civic or Toyota camry commuter car. They go forever, there are VERY few models and model years that need to be avoided, and they just don’t break down even if you don’t baby them like a car enthusiast would.

In the US there is a subset of people who get obsessed with German stuff just being nicer than stuff from other places, those people tend to be really really insufferable people and from my American perspective it has always annoyed me that Japanese cars just annihilate German cars in how well engineered they are to just work for years with no bullshit and yet there is still a very strong cultural association with German = well engineered in the US that I think is utterly unwarranted. This mindset is also reflected in how much repairs cost to do, German cars are seen as nicer so of course mechanics will charge more. It is cheap as shit to get a mechanic to repair your beater Camry.

I drove a Honda Fit (Jazz in Europe I believe?) for most of my life, there wasn’t any space in that thing to work on either and I have met tons of Fit owners who love the shit out of their car in the US. I easily could have gone for a VW hatchback but honestly the Honda Fit just utterly destroyed the VW options along every practical metric including maintenance, reliability and usable interior space. Was my Fit as fun to drive as a nice VW hot hatchback? Heck no but at the same time the steering was precise and lively.

Look I am not saying Americans aren’t loud assholes who make stupid decisions, I agree with you there I hate my country lol. I think there may be real differences between maintenance and parts cost and maybe even quality control for US sold VWs versus ones sold in Europe so maybe we aren’t talking about quite the same thing really?

Honestly nice to hear some huge good news like this. Both the places mentioned in this article are drop dead gorgeous and we are fools for ever inhibiting the salmon runs and other animal’s uses of it. These places are far more valuable to everyone in the longterm with great healthy gargantuan runs of salmon clogging up the streams every year.

Do they magically make Volkswagens more reliable in other countries then?

Unless things have changed in the last 3 or 4 years Volkswagens consistently come out pretty badly in reliability and cost of maintenance ratings. So do most German car brands.

Never gonna buy a volkswagen purely because of that BS, I guess it helps that most of their cars are expensive junk that is always breaking and expensive af to fix and maintain like lots of german cars...

I love that tech companies were willing to invest hundreds of billions into VR with no clear understanding of where the huge adoption of users is going to come from and what even the killer experience is going to be using them and yet here we clearly have the future of gaming just waiting for other companies to invest further into the relatively assured long term and short term success of it.

The usecases are clear for the steam deck, the user base is clear, the focus effect on indie games prioritizing working well on the steam deck is clear and is a sign of how much momentum is really shifting even though it isn’t reflected in big numbers yet. This is the most obvious tectonic shift in electronics and entertainment that has come along probably in my lifetime.

In the future you know what gaming computer kids are going to get first (if it isn’t a console)? It is super obvious to me is going to be something like a steam deck. Parents are going to figure a steamdeck device is far more portable, practical and cheap and they will think ok they can get a pc down the road and play the same games I buy them if they want.

Windows is a sinking ship, it just makes less and less sense to let the person controlling your operating system be microsoft when Linux keeps getting better.

It is a pretty mind blowing technological achievement even though plenty of other cities have better systems, the numbers are just so big for subways.

Honestly what kind of conversation are you looking to have? I don’t need to waste my time listening to libertarian babies who haven’t fully developed their sense of empathy nor even a genuine awareness that they will be sick and frail one day like the people they constantly shit on for needing handouts.

I’d rather an echo chamber with people having genuinely progressive, illuminating conversations than a bunch of babies all screaming words they don’t even really understand the meaning of…. which is all to say I am perfectly fine with how left this space is.

I believe the New York subway system moves about the same amount of riders per day as the entire US continental air travel system. Imagine trying to keep that whole thing running when it is a political target that rich people use as basically a dog whistle for shitting on poor people. You also have to put these kinds of accidents into perspective with that kind of magnitude of rides that went perfectly fine.

Some conservative idiot with a camera in front of them called Star Wars too woke and then was like “that is why I like Star Trek”….. which obviously indicates they had no idea about the basic aspects of Star Trek.

I mean yeah he actually wasn’t quick to denounce Israel’s genocide in Gaza. I am super happy he has come around but I think I’m the beginning he was reluctant to (not because he agreed with it, because he probably didn’t want to mess with Israeli money coming after him politically).

I got steel panthers (winspww2 to be specific) working on my steam deck, updated to the newest camp workshop version too.

The low resolution DOS style graphics actually are a natural fit for the steamdeck’s lower resolution screen lol.

I am having a lot of fun, there are many tactical war games that have come out since steel panthers 2’s original release that are technically superior in every single way but I am not sure they are better. Artillery is terrifying in this game and scouting is filled with tension.

Hmm do y’all still believe the video game industry needed to make cuts and fire workers to the degree they did this year because of overshooting growth with covid? Yes I am sure it is part of it but why is nobody talking about the AI elephant in the room. The video game industry is in the midst of trying to strong arm workers into accepting a fundamental reduction in their quality of life because they can use the threat of replacing workers with AI. It doesn’t matter if it actually works to replace workers with AI, it only matters that it appears fairly plausible for it to pay off for massive companies trying to extract every bit of profit from video games they can.

I mean yeah it is heartbreaking how artists are going to be FURTHER devalued in society 🙃

There was a lot of custom modded vehicles for a Midtown Madness 2 and I loved digitally hoarding them and trying them all out as a kid. There was one modded vehicle that was an 18 wheeler tractor that had its speed adjusted to be totally borked fast (not just “that’s cheating” fast, more like “I’m not sure the game engine can handle this” fast). You would hold forward on the truck for a second or two and then let go and then you would zoom forward and get launched half way across the map. Some of my formative experiences in life with the world of janky mods that do hilarious stuff.

No company is too big to merge with another company here in the land of the free where corporations are people and humans are worthless trash!
