  • chromeOS provides a LOT. its very easy to use and quite reliable, and its super easy computer illiterate people to get into.

I have tried most distros, pretty much every single one that claims to be user friendly. not a single one holds a candle to chrome/chromiumOS.

for a lot of people chromeOS is genuinely a good experience that Linux simply cannot replicate. the polish is very much beyond what other distros provide.

  • if you can provide some of the images it would probably help, a good idea is to simply firstly look at the image in a hex editor to see if there are any notifiers of file type. but sharing the files you got would be a good idea

  • Im not too worried myself, it's worth noting that I myself am perfectly fine using a fully foss android phone with the sole exception of discord, since even the webclient for that sucks. it is possible they could eventually go down that path, but as long as the option is there for foss I don't really mind too much

  • I hate tech and computers in general now, I find myself constantly fighting bugs and issues in general.

this is why I use arch, it allows me to minimize junk that constantly and neverendingly breaks on me, so now i have a system that just works with fairly little pain points

  • literally, all Chrome OS / chromium OS needs to do for me to actually embrace it. is native out of box flatpack support

one issue I might see them having with flatpack, is the permissions right now are handled kind of stupidly IMO. but if those get solved I think flatpack would be a great addition to chromium os ecosystem

  • I never do the latter anymore. was downloading a pretty rare dvd rip awhile ago I only found after a really long time. download was slow, for about 4 days I was downloading and then seeder went offline and afaik never came back up. now I try to make sure if im the only seed to try and make sure they get priority to decrease the chances of that happening

EDIT: btw props to btdigg, I did eventually find it in some collection thanks to that

  • one thing ill say. flutter via aur is kinda a pain, I would reccomend installing the flutter package, not flutter-git, then adding it to ignore-pkg in /etc/pacman.conf then letting flutter handle updates

  • Av1 is pretty well supported now on a lot of devices thanks to dav1d, and it's the video codec with the best quality:compression ratio. "broad device compatibility" will be up to you and your devices, I would seriously look into it. It's what I personally encode all my stuff to.

as for audio Opus or AAC, AC-3 is bad
