  • You're probably not realizing how anti-semitic the formation of Israel was. Look at it this way: the colonial powers that won WW2 decided it was better to steal land and push their Jewish populations there, rather than offer their Jewish populations protection domestically.

With that in mind, its not much of a surprise that Hitler was also for the expulsion of Jewish people from Europe.

  • because 30% is an impossible amount to spend on housing anyway. If rent costs 50% of your income, then "only" spending 40% of your income on a mortgage payment is a massive step up. You're also quite a bit less likely to have your mortgage payment suddenly increase year after year in the way that rent hikes, so getting into a slightly expensive mortgage early can pay dividends later if your wages increase annually.

  • I don't work with patients, and my area of research doesn't have much overlap with psychopathy or schizotypal behavior thankfully. My research subjects are screened to try and exclude people with those traits beforehand. I've known colleagues that have spent some time working for prison populations though, so if your question is whether I think this particular girl is beyond saving, not even close. Some of the stories my colleagues have told me about patients they had at prison, patients that scared them even when an armed guard was present, those patients don't typically feel remorseful for what they've done or even acknowledge it was wrong. It seems like in this case, the girl got wrapped up in a fantasy that was encouraged when she was young by her friend, and nobody was there to intervene and push her back to reality. It's just a sad tragedy. If anything, I'd be more worried about her succumbing to depression due to guilt.

  • Psychologist here, depends on what you mean by treated. Most mental illnesses aren't like a cold where you're able to take some medication and get rid of it, they're more like a chronic back injury that you learn to manage. For most people, some combination of therapy and chemical treatment is sufficient to allow them to live a life where their mental health is managed. There are people whom chemical treatment doesn't work on, sometimes because of unhealthy brain chemistry, and who are unwilling or unable to participate in therapy. Unfortunately for these people, there's not much that can be done for them short of a miracle.

  • Yeah, let's go live to Duterte now, how'd that plan go for him? Oh, it seems like there were a ton of extrajudicial killings that they couldn't ever confirm to human rights groups if the people being murdered were actually drug dealers, or just political dissidents.

Aw shucks, unfortunately it seems like empowering vigilante groups to murder anyone they perceived as a drug dealer without requiring investigations was a bad idea after all.

  • No, the same group will praise Russia for being strong and their citizens being in line, and will say something incredibly racist about China. These people aren't informed enough to have opinions about the police-states of other countries, and the talking heads at Fox News don't vomit one into their mouths.

  • Went from living paycheck to paycheck to having a full $1k in my account right now after dumping my ex and moving out. I always thought that having two incomes combined would be better than just my own, but never realized how massive a drain my ex was compared to just taking care of myself.

That being said, I'm able to live cheaply because I use public transit, cook all my own meals, and I don't eat that much. I think for most adults in the U.S., especially those who need a car for transit, the honest truth is that their wages just barely cover all their necessary living expenses.

  • That's entirely your choice, it's not a requirement of life. You can continue learning new information, there's nothing that forces you to give into ignorance. I'd also say there's a pretty big difference between "I'm not a very tech savvy person" and "I am completely helpless and choose to make it other people's problem."

  • Recently had a support call with a woman who was complaining about our 2 factor authentication system because she could only access one web page at a time. When I asked her if she couldn't just open a new tab, she said she was too old to learn how computers work and couldn't do that. She went on to claim that there's a lot of people at her level of ineptitude, and that we shouldn't have implemented 2fa because "most people don't have multiple monitors."

It was so, so hard not to throw out an OK Boomer as they proudly lectured me on the depths of their ignorance.

  • Yeah, they think it's a sign that "too many gays" are now in Florida, and God has to punish the sodomites.

Trying to get Florida Republicans to do any amount of introspection would be like trying to teach an ant to play basketball.

  • Isn't one of the newer mutants just ...an actual furry? I think their name is Good Boy and their power is to turn into their blue and white wolf fursona?

Just to say, this isn't even the most furbait thing Marvel has done, the rabbit hole goes deeper.

  • Doesn't really matter though, none of the big news agencies have any journalistic integrity anyway. If everyone's just gonna make up bullshit to get ad revenue, the only thing that really matters to a politician is what audiences does a content creator give them access to.
