Americans have come to think of Chinese products as bad quality because of the American companies who engage them for cheaper labor. Walmart was known to order products made to a certain spec one year, then the next year demand the company increase production, but for the same amount paid as the previous year. The Chinese company, not wanting to lose the contract, obliges, but corners have to be cut. It should be called Americanesium, not Chineseum.

Derek Guy (Die, Workwear!) posted a thread a while back (I think about 6 months ago) about how the Chinese can and do make great quality products, pointing out high quality fabrics. Give them money to buy good raw materials, give them a decent wage, and they'll put out a good product. Honestly, they probably have a more fair work ethic than some American companies that just feed their CEOs massive salaries or are owned by private equity.

I still use Facebook (many friends and relatives still there) but only through the web browser. Never ever install an app if you can help it. FB has tried to make the web version worse and worse in the mobile browser, though, to try to force people to use the app. Comment input boxes got janky and now chat is impossible unless you check "desktop site". These things worked fine a couple years ago.

Christ up a tree, that was an untrained volunteer who fired and killed an innocent bystander? And was told not to carry? I had assumed police were doing security. I hope the idiot gets charged with at least manslaughter. That was entirely irresponsible. I'm sure the charge is going to land on the arrested guy but honestly the volunteer is responsible for unsafely firing.

I seem to have the right stuff on my laptop, but not on my phone. When I play escape games on the phone I occasionally need a walkthrough video, so I'm switching between 3 apps: the game, my notes (a paint app) and the video. Walkthrough videos typically have an ad at the beginning and maybe one in the middle, and I don't mind watching 15-30 seconds of ads for the YouTuber's work.

This used to be pretty seamless, but a couple weeks ago something changed. When switching back to YouTube, it would not return me to the video but to the home screen. I have to go to "You" to get the video I was just watching, and when I click it it plays the ads again, then jumps to where I left off. So now every time I switch away I have to view an ads again when I switch back, which really sucks balls. I don't think the phone is running out of memory since other apps I have open switch right back to where they left off. So I'd love to get something that will skip all that.

It would be trivial to spoof it if some jerk wanted to cause fear in brown people they don't like. Just like people have already used masks and posed as ICE to rob.

Blocking traffic, as much as it is a pita to drivers, is not rioting. It's a peaceful protest and well within 1A.

I was fucking irked when I wanted to use Hey Google to add something to my grocery list. I had switched to Gemini not realizing its scope, and suddenly Gemini was needing voice permission then some other seemingly unrelated, unnecessary permission (can't recall exactly but something like collaborative documents) to add to my grocery list. Fuck that. Then it seemed very difficult to find the setting to switch back to Google assistant, but I eventually found it.

Intimidation or domination. Same way they want undocumented people to "self-deport" or when the cop tells you to read him the info on your driver license even though he's perfectly capable of doing it himself.

Who the hell still carries around paper checks? I think I've written a total of 3 checks in the past 4-5 years, all for home service like plumbers.

With Trump it's hard to know with certainty what will happen, between flipflops and flat-out lying. I think the speed with which the various government agencies collapsed/capitulated before Musk & DOGE, and the capitulation of universities over Palestine protests and ICE, were not things anyone could predict. One could predict the rest of the Republicans would go along with all that stuff, but surprised the Democrats are not always fully unified against.
