  • “Should we not be buying VW, BMW, Siemens and Bayer technology and products today because they participated in holocaust and directly collaborated with Hitler?” – CEO of Kagi when given feedback re: Brave partnership

doesn't sound like it's "drama over nothing" to me

  • This is something I don't get. I live in a "third world shithole" (Brazil). Annually, we have to fill online form (that already comes pre-filled), for most people there's a minimal amount of work involved. Only very rich people need accountants and stuff. Why the USA can't (or won't) do something like that is beyond me.

  • As it turns out, sponsoring terror is an extremely cost effective form of international diplomacy

Indeed, this is why Osama bin Laden had CIA backing in the 1980s. Same thing for the Taleban on Afghanistan.

  • Without midi-chlorians there would be no life and we would have no knowledge of the midi-chlorians.

it's a shittier version of the anthropic principle

  • seat belts and air bags are an illusion sold to make us believe that we solved the problem as best we can, even though we didn’t

As someone who has been in a few accidents (both as driver and as passenger), seatbelts saves lives. I wouldn't be here typing this if they didn't.

  • the fact that Catholicism any religion still exists at the scale it does is mind blowing and frankly horrifying.

  • Wow, a rabid American. I hope that the bitten lady has all her vaccines up to date

  • I'm curious about that too

EDIT: nevermind, another post below has the answer: it's a programmable wheel

  • I want more Discworld

so do I, but also fear that executive meddling would butcher the originals beyond all recognition

  • If I recall correctly this was announced years ago, I remember that it was one of the reasons that made me stop playing. That and the constant aggravation at the breakage that happened whenever they updated their client.

  • Prof Andrew Dessler, at Texas A&M University in the US, said the record set in 2023 was not surprising: “Every year for the rest of your life will be one of the hottest [on] record. This in turn means that 2023 will end up being one of the coldest years of this century. Enjoy it while it lasts.”

I feel sorry for those younger than me. It will suck to grow up with this climate and things are bound to get even worse

  • used to be a rhythmbox guy but I've been using audacious for a few years now

  • Maybe the opinion of someone who switched recently would be more useful to you. I'm probably a little biased since I've been exclusively running linux for almost 20 years now

    and a 2015 Windows 10 laptop

It's very easy to create a bootable USB stick to just try it out and, if you have enough hard disk to spare and your experience is fine, make it dual boot. This way you can assess if it works for you or not

  • It wouldn’t exist at all if capitalism didn’t exist.

Science doesn't need capitalism to exist. Technology doesn't need to be for-profit to be developed.
