  • Wipr is a simple "set it and forget it" extension. While it's not as flexible as AdGuard, it's also a lot less complicated to use because it manages the filters automatically. But it does not have a way to modify the filters.

I've never tried Ghostery, but I should check it out.

  • Anything 5-10 years old or older. Chances are, it won't work unless it's a static binary. Linux has long had a policy of "F backwards compatibility" in the userspace, so you need to dig up the 5-10 year old libraries it needs to run. And for anything 32-bit, you also need to install the 32-bit versions of all your system libraries.

Acting like "old app won't run" is exclusive to macOS is misleading.

  • The only thing I can think of was that the mods announced a time limit of 48 hours for the protests, but I'm not sure that making all the protests indefinite would have solved anything.

Spez was determined to copy Elon Musk even though Elon clearly doesn't know how to run a social media platform. Now both Reddit and Twitter are dying.

  • I get that, but their mission seems to be against the concept of federation. They want a safe space.

  • Ever since covid hit, so many restaurants by me are only open until 2 or 3 in the afternoon, and a lot of their owners have been resorting to whining on Facebook that they're not getting customers anymore. Most of these places used to be open 24 hours or close late.

Almost nobody wants Mexican food or a steak dinner at 7 in the morning. Businesses need to be there for their customers. You can't just be open at 6 in the morning until 2 in the afternoon just because that's when you want to work if you're in that business.

  • The way BeeHaw is run makes me wonder why they even bother with federation. They want a safe space.

  • The main issue is that Lemmy instances, by default, only know about their local communities and remote communities that the users of that server have deliberately subscribed to. Some smaller instances are running federation helpers which are bots that search for remote communities to fix this.

  • Started with a really small instance, didn't really have a whole lot of content in All and struggled to find communities, so I joined lemmy.world, which got me a lot more content and communities, but now it's constantly having issues. So I'm trying this instance (as an alt for now) because there is a federation helper running on it. I'm honestly not sure which instance I will stick with long-term.
