  • My wife and I spent Christmas in Costa Rica (it was amazing, and we are moving there as soon as reasonably possible), and we caught some European cold/flu thing from a group of people staying at the same hotel as us in Monteverde. 3 of them went to hospital from it while we were there.

So we spent NYE on the couch under covers. I did make a couple drinks to celebrate. She sneakily had 3 beers. Seriously, suddenly she was drunk and I had no idea she had had one beer!

  • TBH, I can’t blame them. It’s the same motivation that pushed these companies to embrace gays and trans people. They’re all paying customers. Line must go up sometimes means you advertise to and publicly embrace marginalized communities in search of larger market share. Sometimes it means you kiss the ring of the ensuing fascist ruler.

  • This is the perfect example of how completely fucked the US is. First, Trump’s fans either won’t see this or won’t care. They won’t care because many of them agree that eliminating the Democratic Party is a legit goal. Second, it shows that governing isn’t at all the goal, not that any intelligent person thought it ever was. The goal is winning at all costs. Finally, this (the “running” of this country) is all theater while people are losing their homes and parasites like Trumps entire cabinet are enriching themselves at a truly obscene pace.

None of this is exactly new info, of course, this one news tidbit just perfectly sums it all up. I don’t think the country’s going to fall apart in my lifetime, but the crest of its arc is well and fully behind us, I think.

  • Well look who underestimated the gullibility of the mob!

    Or…

Well look who shocked the people who didn’t vote for Trump by how dumb they’re not!

Ofc they’re gonna do all this shit anyway, b/c the King don’t care what the poors want.

  • AGREED! It’s insane to me that there’s a federally mandated retirement age for civil service employees… unless you run things or have actual power! That’s just stupid.

  • Pretty much. More and more, I think the US is basically the wealthiest third-world country the world has ever known. Not so much in the average quality of life dept, but more like everything is visibly rotting towards a point where I think we will see a sort of modern dark ages. Probably not in my lifetime.

  • Not a software dev, but for me it’s the constant leap from today’s “next best thing” to tomorrow’s. Behind the Bastards did an episode on AI, and his take resonated with me. Particularly his Q&A session with some AI leaders at, I think, CES not long ago. When the new hotness gets popular, an obscene amount of money is paired with the “move fast and break things” attitude in a rush to profit. This often creates massive opportunities for grifters as legislators are mind numbing slow to react to these new technologies. And when regulations are finally passed (or more recently, allowed by the oligarchs), they’re often written to protect the billionaires (read: “job creators”) more than the common customer. Everyone’s bought into the idea that slow and methodical stifles innovation. At least the people funding and regulating these things have.
