  • I agree with you that it's systemic. If I look around me (I live in NL but I also see it across the border), people have just become more right-leaning. Talking about foreigners like they're the problem, blaming them for stuff, it's all part of "normal" conversation to them now. This really changed a lot the last 5-10 years, before that there was maybe the occasional nut job but everyone else was pretty moderate.

If anything, being locked in their houses for so long and the (at times pretty intense) discourse around getting vaccinated is what drove a big wedge between groups of people that were before able to discuss things in a somewhat civilized way. I don't think Putin had much to do with that but he sure profited from it.

  • It sounds compelling but like the article states at the end, I'm not sure if it's going to change much. The DNC are way too timid to even consider challenging on something like this and the 2020 shenanigans have soured a lot of people on the "election fraud" claims.

If you put your tinfoil hat on you could even say that this was part of their tactic: make false claims to annoy everyone only to then commit fraud yourself later. It would he an almost perfect plan.

  • They are getting behind her though, any video I've seen talking about her history with Russia, China and Syria is getting inundated with Trumpers yelling that it's leftist propaganda and shouting that "they didn't start talking about it until she became a republican". It's ridiculous and there's no argument that would convince these people otherwise.

  • Most of the EU is part of it though so if they stick to it they'd have to arrest him if he enters their countries. Although I already saw France was calling it "a complex case" and saying that they weren't sure whether they'd actually arrest him if he visited...

  • Understandable, it's all a matter of perspective. There's no ideal way of democracy and any way has it's pros and cons. I'd say that overall my gripe is a somewhat minor one but it does lead to big issues sometimes, especially during election times because the biggest party gets first dibs on creating the government. More fragmentation on your side of the political spectrum (left vs. right) can therefore lead to splintering of the votes and losing out on being the biggest.

This is more or less what happened last time. The leftist parties tried to prevent it by joining forces shortly before the election but the amount of leftist parties we have still meant that votes were somewhat splintered; that is (among other factors) how we ended up with another right-wing government after people clearly seemed to be done with over 10 years of right-wing Rutte politics.

  • I’d love to be able to vote for some fringe leftist party knowing I’ll not waste my vote

But in a way it will. Many of these fringe parties never have a chance to make it into the government and will forever be in the opposition, meaning their impact isn't very big. The PVV started off like this as well and their leader, Geert Wilders, has only ever wanted to be the person shouting at stuff from the opposition side of the fence. Even now, when he has the biggest party, they had to come up with some wicked solution where he's not the PM and not in the government itself. Instead, it's a neutral PM with some ministers and everyone else is in the opposition and constantly criticising their own "government". It's ridiculous and so far they haven't gotten much done.

In my opinion, a cutoff of 5% is a bit high but I also think that parties should have more than 1 seat to even make it into the chamber, otherwise it'll turn into a mess real quick.

  • Just make sure not to take it too far if you do proportional voting. We have a system in the Netherlands that works like that but the result is that we now also have about 30 parties running for government, most of them being fairly pointless. Don't get me wrong, it's better than the US shenanigans but you can also go too far.

  • And there will still be delusional voters saying that shit isn't going to hit the fan the second Trump takes over. It's insane how far up their own ass they are. At this rate it honestly wouldn't surprise me if he tries to arrest Biden the second he hands over the reigns.

  • It's a lot more difficult to blame things on others once you've been in charge for that long and shit still fails and breaks down. That's my hope for other countries as well, that the continued downward spiral under a right wing government eventually makes the pendulum swing back towards the left. I just hope that there'll be politicians to jump in once the opportunity arises.

  • Unless they change the rules, Trump cannot have another term. I'd honestly be surprised if he survives all the way until 2028 anyway, he's already ancient and pretty unhealthy. Add to that that people might try and take matters into their own hands and you get a pretty dangerous mix. I'm not sure if JD stepping in would be better though, he seems even crazier and definitely more insidious than the orange man.

  • As a Dutch person we'd happily welcome the more sensible Americans over here 🙂. I can't guarantee our government wouldn't try to stop a mass migration wave given their anti-immigrant policies though.

It's funny, my partner and I were actually talking about moving to the US for a while to spend more time with my American in-laws but I think that'll be out of the window for the next four years.
