  • In keeping with the provisions of Article VI of this Agreement, and in accordance with general rules mutually agreed upon and issued by the appropriate Danish authority in Greenland, the Government of the United States of America may enjoy, for its public vessels and aircraft and its armed forces and vehicles, the right of free access to and movement between the defense areas through Greenland, including territorial waters, by land, air and sea. This right shall include freedom from compulsory pilotage and from light or harbor dues. United States aircraft may fly over and land in any territory in Greenland, including the territorial waters thereof, without restriction except as mutually agreed upon.

  • Well the news today are that the visit will now only be in the USA military bases and that they will not attend a planned visit to some dog race that they had originally planned.

From what I know of other USA military bases, they are more or less considered USA territory. In any way though, the visit will now be contained within the military bases

  • I don't have one I am sorry. We don't even have chlorine in ours here any more

  • Yes definitely. There will be no official contact between them. Also a lot of police has been brought in from Denmark for this

Silent protests are planned. They will be turning their backs to the convoys when they drive past them

  • Usa was granted free access to greenmal in 1951 and were allowed to build military bases without even telling Denmark what they are up to. It is more complicated than just closing the door on them

  • This is not an option, based on the agreement made between Denmark and USA in 1951.

I agree that they should stay away, especially when asked to stay away by the government, but its not so straight forward

  • Are you sure? Greenland and USA have had a very special agreement since 1951. I am not sure that this is the case.

  • He's so good at teaching people a lesson... Like to take your voting rights serious...

  • You can get magnesium tablets. Adding it to tap water could work but we use water for so many other things besides drinking. There i for example no need for it to be in the water that washing machines use, no need to clean the dishes or your floors in magnesium enriched water either...

  • I hope that this can be a point to make. Also talks are to require USA to be part of NATO in order to keep their presence there. Greenland is a very powerful hand for NATO to play against USA because it is basically one of two backdoors of USA, and the shortest distance for the Russians to access it. Alaska is the other one.

  • Its an interesting story and the deal was done in good faith. But there have been some crazy things going on there. During the cold war, USA used to have planes in the air, with atomic bombs, 24 hours a day, in order to be able to react fast to any attack.

One of them actually crashed and a lot of the help that came to the rescue were contaminated and died shortly after. Nobody knew that they were hydrogen bombs and there are talks that they were never recovered. If you have the time, look into it! Also a secret underground base to hide launch sites that never really worked because the tunnels in the ice, couldn't hold, due to the movement of the ice.

  • This is how democracy works though. The USA has elected Trump and his administration so if your 70% is true, then the result should have been different.

For now, these are the consequences of the choices that the majority of the USA ellected

  • Agreed

Trump is giving the rest of the world the right cards to strengthen their future ties to USA but also to close any backdoors that no one would have imagined when the standing agreements were made

  • In Denmark this is being called hybrid warfare, similar to what Russia did in Crimea before the annexation

  • The USA has had free access to build military bases on Greenland since the early 50s without even telling Denmark. This is the issue at the moment, as Denmark or Greenland, can't forbid them from traveling to their own bases

Article 5, paragraph 3, guaranteed the US and its troops unrestricted freedom of operation between these bases, on land, air, and sea, throughout the entire national territory. Article 6 obliged the US "to show due respect for all regulations and customs affecting the population and the administration of Greenland"

  • I don't think that they will feel welcomed in Greenland any time soon. I trust that their visit will be unpleasant. That said, saying that they are repulsive to most of the US, is not going to cut it. Having elected this administration, has its consequences, and you can't just say "oh we hate him too"... This is not how democracy works. The Trump administration is the US for now, and to change this, you have to wait until the next election.

  • NATO membership and that they will enforce paragraph 5 if it is needed. This is what talks there are atm.

But i don't know if it is even possible to require thism they have had free access to build military bases there ever since the cold war and did not even have to tell Greenland or Denmark what they were up to. Same rules still should apply so I don't see why they now want ownership (maybe besides greed and vanity)
