  • I think you can already get the desktop GUI version. If I remember correctly, the installer script just downloads the appropriate binary to an appropriate path. The only irritation is that they don't have arm binaries, and it's rather difficult to compile. I've not managed to do it. Hopefully they'll just release arm binaries soon.

  • Nice. It's pretty great. I particularly like the multiple identities. I have one on my phone that only connects to all of my devices, and I can send notifications/code snippets/whatever I need between them. With the CLI app, you can even set it up to pipe messages directly to your notifications daemon, or automatically accept files.

  • Funny. My WD nas runs linux and the support ended so i've had to upgrade myself with entware... and it's old, so the fan was sized for cooler hard drives, so I cut a hole in the top and screwed on another fan... and WD removed NFS support years ago, so I just mount my shares oversshfs... and i'm currently upping my local security so it's only accessible over wireguard... honestly, I have no idea what it's doing with the hardware raid and the way it mounts drives so i'm tempted to switch over to mergerfs and snapraid...

Basically my legit consumer hardware raid nas is more duct tape and bubblegum than my home built linux nas. Then again, it's easily a decade past its anticipated useful life too.

I guess it is a point of pride.

  • Are they as naggy about upgrading from a free license as autodesk? I see that all designs in the free tier license are public, which I imagine stops a lot of commercial abuse. Seems like a fair trade off to me. I put anything I think anyone would find useful on thingiverse anyway.

Fusion used to be great, but they bother me so much about upgrading now. It's a hobby. I'd spend a couple hundred bucks on the software if they had a 'seriously, i'm a legit hobby user just stop nagging me' tier, but their pricing is insane if you're not using it to generate income.

  • I feel like people like sports because they give them an opportunity to act obnoxiously in public. Like, if someone stands up and yells in a restaurant, it's definitely some sports obsessed dude who wants some attention. I agree with you. I never want to hear about any sports again ever.

  • Yes. You put more into a post, so it hurts more if you don't get anything out of it. If I were to make a post i'd agonize over the wording and set aside time in front of an actual keyboard to respond and then i'd be completely overwhelmed anyway if there was even a modest response to the post. It's a pretty self centered, basic misunderstanding of people to think that everyone can or should make their own posts.

If I reply to someone, I assume at least they read it. As a person who requires little social interaction that's enough for me, even if I wrote an extremely detailed wall of text.

  • If you want it futuristic, replace the hardboard panels with the cheapest clear plastic you can get, which is... a clear plastic mat for an office chair. It'll be clear, with a pebble like texture. I used it on an enclosure I made and it came out great. One mat had enough area to do all the sides, and you can still see through enough to notice if something is horribly wrong.

Or, paint it and then stencil on some angled lines or something in a contrasting primary color. Maybe a different color for each side.

  • Because they take payment already. What people don't like is being nickel and dimed. Google sells ads on the page. They sell ads in the videos. The creators sell their own ads and they ask for patreon and subscriptions and donations. It's too much. I pay for premium. Google logs me out, and then I start seeing video ads again. That's bullshit. For 10 bucks a month I should literally never encounter an ad on YouTube. That's not how it works. Now the price has increased by 50%. Why should I pay that? What benefit do I get? I can use invidious or libretube, or even host my own instance, and be far better off. No ads ever, including sponsored spots. At 10 bucks a month it wasn't worth my time. At 15, I'm insulted enough that it is.

On a side note, I'm autistic enough that I'll say the quiet part out loud. I care about someone making their reasonable living creating content. I don't care about the 'livlihood' of someone who's already so rich it doesn't matter, or some mega global corporation. And it's troubling that most ways you can support a creator end up doing much more to prop up companies or platforms that interact with them in a predatory way. It's not worth several hours of my time for creators to get a couple pennies. That's just a fact.

It's not my fault if a company decided it's not worth it to continue with the advertising platform it created. It's likely just as profitable as it ever was. They just take advantage of their huge size and its stifling effect on competition to squeeze us for everything they can. That's actually illegal and if our governments were doing anything they were supposed to they'd stop it.

  • This type of 'post or you're the problem' comment really gets on my nerves too. If no one replies, people won't post again, and if a sub is nothing but single posts no one's coming back.

It's great you're putting in the effort to post, and people should appreciate that. I'm autistic and I can't post. I can give incredibly detailed information in response to a post or a comment if it relates in any way to any of my special interests. And I do. And so do people like me. It's why you can find the answer to basically any question on the internet. These 'post more' people need to cool it, because the reason people like content like this is depth and engagement and it's not going to happen without people engagine with the content too.

  • Twice in a neighboring city i've been routed to the wrong location. They use street/avenue for ns/ew so maybe the map had them backwards. My input was correct and it found an address both times.
