  • It is an issue of human nature.

But the point is, don't give out a power that will be abused. It's that fucking simple.

Do not give the government the power to kill its own citizens, and the government will stop abusing that power. I don't know why this is a hard concept to understand.

  • Don't kill them at all, because at least 4% of them are completely innocent.

An error rate that large is just insane.

When you add in the non-death row cases, that number is actually larger. Because our criminal punishment system needs massive reform. I do not call it a justice system, because there is no justice in it.

  • The thing is, we already know exactly how nitrogen affects humans, and we know due to industrial accidents.

I'll preface this next part by saying that I don't think the death penalty should exist at all, and that when you give the State the power to kill, that power will be abused.

    So, addressing the author's "concerns";

    • You can only hold your breath for so long. The stress of doing so would be no worse than the stress of knowing you're being executed. You can make the exact same stress argument about any form of execution.
    • Ill fitting masks are a concern, but nitrogen by itself is not a concern in a well ventilated room. The prisoner dies, not because of the nitrogen itself, but because the nitrogen displaces oxygen. Normal air is about 78% nitrogen. Any other concerns can be alleviated by having oxygen sensors in the room.
    • Saving someone from nitrogen hypoxia is actually pretty easy if you get to them quickly. And again, a well ventilated room means that it will be completely safe for everyone (except the guy wearing the mask)
    • Mice are not humans. Humans cannot tell when there's more nitrogen than there should be. That's why nitrogen is so dangerous in an industrial setting.

Basically, the author comes off as having failed every basic science class they ever took.

  • Punches the computer and starts blaming the Jews, because the unfortunate truth is that Bobby Fisher, in addition to be a massive prima donna, was kind of a Nazi.

It's actually pretty wild, Bobby Fisher's chess mentor openly walked around with a swastika lapel pin, in the 1950s.

  • It's not the reason sane people don't start murdering, but it is the reason Abbott hasn't.

Says more about Abbott than it does the rest of us.

But no, the point was that arresting a sitting governor would be a massive political move, and the AG would likely run that by his boss (the president) before doing it. But I get the feeling he would still do it regardless, and that Biden would okay it regardless.

  • It is how the League of Nations fell apart.

Italy invaded Ethiopia, and the king of Ethiopia made an impassioned plea to the League. They were the only independent African nation, and were actually members of the League.

The plea was ignored, and Mussolini's Italy committed war crimes that were easily on par with anything the Nazis did when it came their turn to invade a country, and methed out Nazis had literal baby shooting competitions in Poland.

  • The Judiciary doesn't decide prosecution, the Attorney General does.

In this case, that would be Merrick Garland, who was appointed by Biden, and serves on Biden's Cabinet.

Do remember that the President of the United States is the head of the Executive Branch, of which the Department of Justice is a part. This is basic High School civics stuff.

  • The problem with those sorts of niche communities is that they need constant (sometimes heavy-handed) moderation to remain on topic. The Fediverse is not really good at that yet.

That and there needs to be a core of dedicated posters producing new, and good, content.

Reddit made a lot of it easy. Good(ish) mod tools (if you used third party apps or browser extensions) and communities that were large enough to keep people interested in the niche subs.

But we all know how that tuned out.

  • Actually, a bit of both.

There was an initial order that the judge issued that laid out how the trial was going to go. This order would have things that Trump was required to do, or things that he was prohibited from doing. (that part is rare in pre-trial orders) Anyway, the prosecutor can look at that order, and make a motion to hold Trump in contempt if Trump violated it.

That contempt charge would then be added onto the final order, the one that's likely to completely dissolve the Trump organization. Jail time in such a contempt is usually issued as "suspended" meaning that it's ordered, but if the person doesn't fuck up for a period, and obeys the final order, then they don't actually have to go to jail.

The other type of contempt is when Trump disregards the Judge while in the courtroom. And that one is a straight to jail type thing. The judge here might be brave enough to do it. Or mad enough.

After all, Trump's followers have made bomb threats to this judge's home. That makes people a tich mad.

  • They aren't on the same level of fraudulent bullshit, but they're close.

Fingerprint matching is done "by eye" and often involves an "expert" saying that one smudge is a 100% match for another smudge.

DNA matching is the only forensic science that's worth a damn, and only if it's done correctly.

  • Sadly, VW has never strayed far from their roots.

They've always been just a little scummy on the business practices side of things. More than a little scummy during WW2...

They do sometimes have good engineering. Which means fuck all in the face of management who want to cut corners and cheat to make more money.

  • Best I can do is a "Holy fuck, that's a big gun".

For example, the Pfeifer-Zeliska .600 Nitro Express Revolver. It takes British made rifle rounds, each costing $40.

Then there's the Magnum Research BFR, .45/70 Government. It, too, takes rifle rounds. You can even get the BFR in .30-30 Winchester if you want.

Note that shooting these handguns will require some serious arm and wrist strength, not something an older man would have. So best offload the task to his Secret Service.

In which case, you might as well just go for a rifle. In which case, I'd suggest the .950 JDJ If that doesn't count as holy damage, I don't know what would.
