  • Strom Thurmond famously switched parties because the Democrats decided to end segregation.

The story there is actually fascinating. There was a time during the late 50s, early 60s when it could have been Republicans who were champions of civil rights.

After all, it was Eisenhower who started desegregating the military, and who ordered the 101st Airborne in to protect the Little Rock Nine.

Southern Democrats were the people pushing back against it all, because they were the conservatives.

Republicans and Democrats worked together on the 1957 civil rights act. And when there was pushback against it, Democrats and Republicans worked together to weaken the bill with some bad amendments. Stom Thurmond set a record for a standing filibuster during this process.

Then Eisenhower pushed through the Civil Rights act of 1960. This made it easier for black people to actually vote, but that was it.

The moment that sort of cemented things with the racists choosing the Republican side was the election of JFK. Well, not exactly the election itself, but a moment during the election.

Martin Luther King was arrested in October 1960, Kennedy publicly(ish) called King's family, and pulled favors to get King released, which likely saved King's life.

Oddly, Nixon and King had known each other for a few years at that point, and King had given Nixon advice a few times. Nixon, was told by his campaign manager to maintain silence about King's arrest. Kennedy and King had only recently met, although one of the people working on Kennedy's campaign was a long time friend of the King family.

Anyway, King was released, and national newspapers credited Kennedy, and lambasted Nixon for his silence. King as well was angry at Nixon, because the two were friends, or so King had thought.

So Kennedy was elected, and the black vote helped. Nixon took that as a bit of an insult.

Kennedy, didn't really do much for civil rights as president until shortly before his assassination. He met with civil rights leaders in 1963 and made a speech a few months before his assassination.

It was actually that assassination that let Johnson push through the Civil Rights act of 1964. "Fulfilling Kennedy's dream" justified a lot of shit in the 60s, from civil rights to moon missions.

So yeah, 1964, Berry Goldwater ran on a platform of segregation and racism as a Republican and drew in Thurmond's support. That failed, but Nixon took up the tactic in 1968 with the Southern Strategy, and that cemented the party switch. The southern racists all jumped on to team Republican.

  • You would never cast iron into a podium, that would be heavy as fuck.

No, it was likely welded and then sanded to a mirror finish, before the horrible powder coat was applied.

And no, that does look like real wood.

It's ugly as fuck, but I doubt it's badly built.

  • I can see some differences, but it was obviously made by someone who had looked at that design (or a third design that both are based off of)

The Amazon one looks like fake wood, and the overly expensive one looks like real wood. Real wood drives the price up, but $19k still seems excessive.

Another factor here, the government is informally banned from buying anything not made in America. That informal ban also applies to states buying shit from people and business in other states.

So yeah... A custom lectern, made by someone in Arkansas, made to look like a shitty lectern on Amazon... That's going to be pricey. But not $19k pricey unless they just took the first bid that they got.

  • Wait, that's a picture of the lectern?

I thought it was made from a solid slab or some shit, like those super expensive tables that one guy on Youtube makes. (honestly, it's a bunch of people making those tables, so insert your own favorite)

So yeah, a solid slab of wood is expensive as fuck, and then you add in labor costs... But that lectern looks like shit.

I'm sure it's custom made, but it's also pretty shit.

  • When I was a kid, I had a 90% success rate for getting my cat to come to me and hop up onto my lap.

Now, it would only work if my cat was in the same room, but it did work. Most of the time.

  • I just realized that while I know how it could be done, that there are programs that can map an image onto a 3d shape, and that you could say, tile the faces on the strips, maybe use a side on view so that he's looking at the back of his own head.

There are also ways to animate the image so that he's constantly chasing his own head.

Then I realized I don't really know how to use of the programs that I'd need. I'm pretty sure Blender could do it all...

A further realization that easy ways to do it is to just tile his dace, (preferably a side view) on the Möbius strip you linked using Paint. It wouldn't look as good, but it would work.

  • There was a news article posted yesterday that was talking about how Bibi was basically actively ignoring Gaza and Hamas to focus on more ethnic cleansing in the West Bank.

The basic strategy was to apparently actually funnel a little money to Hamas to prop them up, so that the Palestinians of Gaza and the West Bank would not be able to unify.

The constant low level attacks out of Gaza were also seen as a bonus, because they gave cover for the continued crimes against humanity inflicted on the West Bank.

The IDF (under Bibi's orders) even pulled soldiers off of guarding Gaza so that they could better protect settlers stealing land in the West Bank.

  • He didn't vote to make interracial marriage illegal. That's not come before the court (and likely will not, because people would actually flip the fuck out)

No, what Thomas did was write a dissent in Obergefell that tried to create a make believe difference between the historical precedent of marriage being only between a man and a woman, and the historical precedent of interracial marriage being just as illegal as gay marriage.

He says that what he does is fine and should be celebrated, but if people he doesn't like, do the same, they should rot in prison or be chemically castrated. (Both historically used punishments for being gay)

  • As a note, I24 has flat out made shit up in the past when it comes to Palestine and Israel.

They cannot be trusted in this conflict.

If someone else picks it up (other than that heavy.com piece that just lazily links back to I24) then we can start believing this. Otherwise, treat this story as a probable lie.

  • Or, counterpoint, they knew.

Either it was a case of the information not getting to the right people, or the right people wanted the attack to happen. After all, a very public and horrific attack justifies a lot of sadistic level disproportionate response, and said sadistic level disproportionate response gets the base riled up to vote for you again.

Or, counter-counterpoint, everyone and their dog knows that Israel is spying on everyone and their dog, so all communications by people planning this shit are kept to in person or paper. Anything that has to be transmitted electronically likely is said in code phrases that are agreed on in person.

The truth is likely a combination of all of it.

  • Bush wanted to finish his daddy's war, because the Saudi government wanted Iraqi oil production disrupted/brought to heel.

Bush was trying to drum up support for military action against Saddam from day one, but in a sort of lazy way. He spent several months of his first year in office on vacation.

Anyway, Bush had been told about Bin Laden, and Bin Laden's people being in the US in early August 2001.

There were other warnings, but all of them were ignored.

Here's another fun fact, Daddy Bush was in a meeting of the Carlyle group on 9/11. Also present, were members of the Saudi royal family, and the Bin Laden family.

Baby Bush personally granted exemptions to the nationwide no-fly zone after 9/11 to let the Bin Laden family members flee to Saudi Arabia.

Also of note, the Carlyle group made a shitload of money in the newest venture, Defense Contracting. Specifically, they owned the production facilities that made the Abrams tank.
