The main issue is that different people prefer different approaches based on instances

• !games@lemmy.world is the one for people who enjoy Lemmy world and the centralised experience
• !games@sh.itjust.works is for people who prefer to spread communities across different instances
• !gaming@beehaw.org is for people who enjoy a strong moderation and small community feeling

All of them are valid, but those different views prevent merging the communities
