  • Yep, I don't like it one bit when said to me, and the one time I said it to a much younger vet I'd met I immediately felt uncomfortable having said it. (And I think he was uncomfortable too.)

I joined up because I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life, enjoyed a brief flare of patriotism during and after bootcamp, learned some marketable skills, hated being in by the time I'd been in a year, and got back out as soon as I could to get paid for those skills as a civilian.

Yeah it sucked, and I guess I'm glad that folks appreciate that it sucked, but no one should thank me personally for it. It was my choice to join, and I did it primarily due to a lack of other good options.

I appreciate the veterans that have come after, but generally find the military worship at certain concerts and such to be a bit over the top.

  • While I agree with the overall point, these courtroom examples are highlighting for me how thoroughly different the justice system experience is if you are the right sort of person moreso than fanning the flames of my Trump hatred.

    • Dines with Putin
    • Helped put Trump in office (Hillary's shit campaign helped too.)
    • Poised to help put him in office again.

Meh. Advocate to someone who has the slightest chance of being convinced to vote for her.

  • As an X'er - every step of adulthood has felt like I'm standing against a world that wants any excuse to take anything I have.

I've got almost thirty years in my field, make (very low) six figures, am generally respected within the company I work for and enjoy my job, and we don't live an extravagant lifestyle, but with a family (wife is unable to get a job for reasons) it's like every penny slips through my fingers as fast as I can make it.

Savings hasn't been over three hundred dollars for years, and is usually less. I've had to strangle my 401k and there's not much in it for my looming retirement (hah)

I think I've had maybe one full year in all this time where I wasn't living paycheck to paycheck.

I know I've got it harder than my parents did, and they both acknowledge it, and I know it's only getting harder for the generations coming after.

OTOH, I think Zoomers and younger Millenials may actually see 4 day workweeks, UHC, and/or UBI before they die out - I have hope for your futures getting easier in some ways, even if it's not looking that way currently.

  • Yeah I am so ready to be a Whoopi Goldberg fan, I really want to love her, but then shit like this comes up....

  • Feeds are the secret at Bluesky. Once you have a few of those you like, look at deck.blue.

  • I have ignored Discord for years until recently. It just seems like IRC with a lot of flashiness and emojis. Is there more to this experience? I don't intend to be disparaging, but I looked for some specific topic servers and just found the quality of discussion to be low and the experience to be chaotic.

I'm willing to be told I'm doing it wrong though - is there a "here's the right way to get into discord" approach I'm missing?

  • I think those are literally their talking points in many cases though. I don't think that would work like you think it would.

  • Terrorism is the war of the poor
Hold up a mirror so the script get flipped
Cause when it’s in reverse it ain’t wrong no more
Warfare’s the terrorism of the rich

    Who’s the true guerilla
When the bomb on your body killing innocent civilians
But a life is a life and a killer is a killer
You’re at a desk chillin’ push a button kill a million

See the anguish of the parents
When they’re carrying the body of the baby that they cherish
    When innocent people perish
It’s a very thin line between a soldier and a terrorist

    • Brother Ali, Mourning in America
  • I’m a paramedic, I’ve worked with fentanyl a lot, getting fentanyl on your skin won’t kill you or send you into… Whatever happens to American cops when they “touch” fentanyl.

I'm very skeptical every time I read one of those accounts, but have never been knowledgeable enough to be secure in my skepticism. Thanks for confirming this.

  • Ah sorry! I have only run it from within Docker on Linux. BUT, I'm glad you got it working!
