  • The fact that I have found an alternative purpose for the butter-knife does not satisfy this phrasing from the comment you replied to:

each designed with a single purpose — to kill lots of people as fast as possible

My butter-knife was designed to cut and spread soft food that does not require anything sharper to work with. Those guns are designed and marketed to kill.

By the way, I'm not anti-2A nor anti gun. But I am anti-deflection, among other things. An AR-15 is designed to kill people. Pretending it's not doesn't strengthen your position, it makes your argument seem disingenuous.

  • I’m a liberal and I definitely think we need tighter restrictions on guns in the U.S., but people today seem to have forgotten that we’ve had essentially the same gun laws for forever

Sure but the same party that works so hard against increased legislation for gun control gutted our mental health infrastructure and votes against funding and rebuilding it at every opportunity. They aren't interested in solving either end of the problem.

This last one is a ddg search - you can just pick which article you want to read about Republicans voting against mental health funding.

  • I use a butter-knife to open paint cans with, but that's not what it's for.

  • Is anyone who becomes law enforcement falling for hero fantasies?

Pretty sure nowadays they are power and domination fantasies.

  • Welcome aboard!

I can’t believe I suffered with Windows for as long as I have.

Just the fact that articles like this need to exist (and are plentiful), as one very tame example, makes me wonder what kind of stockholm syndrome has grabbed anyone with a shred of technical understanding who is still using Windows. They actively work to prevent allowing you full control of the OS running on your own hardware, and to make it difficult (or require additional payment) to turn off privacy invading telemetry and advertisement. Ignoring all other complaints that could be made about Windows, how is this not a dealbreaker for way more people than it seems to be?

  • Ok buddy, run along now. Have a nice day!

(Also you don't need to tag someone when you are replying to them.)

  • You got something to say? Come on and say it. Or were you just wanting to make some sideways passive-aggressive implications about the character of people you don't know solely because we won't let what Israel is doing be swept under the rug?

  • For a few years now I've been pretty sure I could retire comfortably from my job if I'd just buy a cricut or similar and jump on the maga grift train.

I'd have a big hateful etsy store with stickers, flags, yard signs (of course - honestly would probably be the hottest sellers) and shit marketed to magas, the alt-right, and republicans. 3% patches, gadsen flag mechandise, the whole works. Given how they like to festoon everything they own with their asshattery I feel really sure I'd be raking it in hand over fist.

"Your neighbors probably can't read your handwritten signs about Biden and the gays - select one of our pre-crafted yard signs or submit your own custom message..."

Almost literally the only thing stopping me is that I don't know how I'd sleep at night enabling so much bullshit.

  • Here is uniform, Comrade, here is Z decal for your car, here is Chinese-made AK-47, here is map to Ukraine border, now go or you will be shot.

  • I’m sure there are plenty of lovely spaces out there too ofc, it’s just finding them that’s the trick :)

Thanks for the followup - I have to agree and I suppose the takeaway is I (possibly) picked the wrong servers so far.

  • So we’re blindly accepting hamas death tolls now? People never learn

People never seem to learn their reputation in this regard before making comments such as yours.

One snippet out of a lengthy article.

Many experts consider figures provided by the ministry reliable, given its access, sources and accuracy in past statements.

“Everyone uses the figures from the Gaza Health Ministry because those are generally proven to be reliable,” said Omar Shakir, Israel and Palestine director at Human Rights Watch. “In the times in which we have done our own verification of numbers for particular strikes, I’m not aware of any time which there’s been some major discrepancy.”

Shakir said Human Rights Watch would not use figures provided by parties with “a propensity to misrepresent information.”

Why news outlets and the U.N. rely on Gaza’s Health Ministry for death tolls

    And another:

Throughout four wars and numerous bloody skirmishes between Israel and Hamas, U.N. agencies have cited the Health Ministry’s death tolls in regular reports. The International Committee of the Red Cross and Palestinian Red Crescent also use the numbers.

In the aftermath of war, the U.N. humanitarian office has published final death tolls based on its own research into medical records.

In all cases the U.N.’s counts have largely been consistent with the Gaza Health Ministry’s, with small discrepancies.

    — 2008 war: The ministry reported 1,440 Palestinians killed; the U.N. reported 1,385.

    — 2014 war: The ministry reported 2,310 Palestinians killed; the U.N. reported 2,251.

    — 2021 war: The ministry reported 260 Palestinians killed; the U.N. reported 256.

What is Gaza’s Ministry of Health and how does it calculate the war’s death toll?

    100% agree there

  • I was going to reference Dr. Manhattan but I'm not familiar enough with the comic to be sure I have the right interpretation of his character. I've only seen the movie.

  • I think you'd wind up losing the ability to have meaningful relationships with your loved ones and others in your life, as your raw intelligence pushed you towards a sort of hyper-rationality. Maybe you'd also stop caring about that. But chances are your loved ones wouldn't.

I'd proceed cautiously. Nudge it up, give some time to see how your life changes as a result. Maybe do some journaling. A couple weeks or months later, nudge it up again, etc. That way you can get some metrics regarding how it's impacting your life and make the decision to stop if you think things are heading the wrong way.

Also something something Lawnmower Man and something something Flowers for Algernon.

  • I'm not a New Yorker, but the fact that you guys elected a cop as Mayor on the heels of 2020 pretty much floored me.

And (again as an outsider) - it looked to me like he immediately installed his brother (to a high paying cop job) in a brazen show of nepotism that gives me further cause to doubt the integrity of how our nation's police conduct business.

  • Maybe (though this is not the description I typically see about reddit these days) but a great many of us are here because we refuse to be there.

  • It’s a group chat app, not a forum. And being thrown into a group chat with 100 strangers is kind of the worst.

I do appreciate that nuance but IRC (as of last I checked - admittedly it's been about a decade since I was habitually connected to IRC) is not really like that despite fitting essentially the same description.

Discord shines when you use it with a tight-knit group. A RL friend group, a gaming clan, etc.

That makes sense, I can see that.
