  • My father gave up red meat and soda around 2002. My dad's clone, my uncle didn't give up anything. Yes they are clones, I sequenced them myself. Since then my dad has always been at least 20lbs heavier than my uncle despite having almost identical activity levels since they had similar jobs and shared hobbies for most of the time. Now 23 years later my dad has heart congestive heart failure and a torn meniscus in his knee while my uncle has a perfect heart but has needed both knees replaced. I think the biggest difference is definitely the sugar because my uncle tends to drink diet soda and my dad fruit juice, tea and coffee.

  • Definitely not, enshitification is real. I've gone from someone excited about new products to I don't trust anything that I didn't build. We are currently discussing moving our group chat off discord, but I'm biochemist and my circle are similar professions and I'm still learning how to properly host things.

  • In the before times we used hamachi, but it was hard. Eventually, Skype was born and it was good and easy. It worked like a phone and many StarCraft 2 team games were won. But Skype was corrupted by the many Nigerian princes and hot Ladies who only needed a few dollars to turn your life around. This corruption was then baked so deeply into windows it took registry edits to exorcise it. But all was good was we now had discord which took the ideas of hamachi and Skype and delived a better experience than both.

  • You'd be surprised how much money gets wasted of stupid projects and acquisitions in biotech because some suit think they understand science better than their R&D team. For analogy sake think about all the stupid shit Microsoft bought and killed or all the chat apps Google created and killed, this going to be Regeneron's Skype.

  • If you really want to get your parents sequenced for your own personal use without it going into a database it'll cost you about $500 per sample (cheaper if you know someone who can extract the DNA for you). You'll get a set of fastq files for the reads that will cover almost their entire genome that you can then use with public databases or just store for future use. Another option is to sign up for a university study but you'll have to be comfortable with their data use.

  • I honestly don't know what they will do with snp data. These investors and VCs have been running scare peace articles for the last two years to drive the company into bankruptcy so that it could be sold and the data harvested. But I honestly think people are really overestimating the value of a dataset showing how different people are from a standard template. It's good for ancestry and correlations but people forget they didn't fully sequence samples. I fully expect the news cycle to change once they figure this out as they try to get people to resubmit DNA for nextgen sequencing, so they can try to salvage their investment.

  • My Rx580 has basically been on continuously since I bought it in like 2017/18. I used it to mine when I wasn't gaming until it became unprofitable, then to process sequencing data for my dissertation project while not gaming, and now it's in my server.

  • I'm an American biochemist, I also never learned the english system because my school transitioned to metric too fast. The mental burden of trying to cook using english units after working all day in the lab using that same part of my brain leads me to just not want to cook 95% of the time. But when I do cook I have optimized processes for my few simple recipes. When I bake I usually use a metric recipe or convert a English one, and optimize it before making a large batch of something.

  • My company layed off the newest hire, and bought $50k of materials we need for R&D for the next year and a half. Im in the process of buying a duplex instead of a single family as a hedge, so my cost of living will be low enough to survive on my wife's part time salary if we can keep a renter. I will be planting food producing trees and bushes, and building garden boxes after close, and learning canning.

  • This is why these retards are in power now. There is enough damage being done to our country to have things to legitimately be upset about. Tangible things like all the kids dying of measles, the dismantling of our research institutions, and gambling our future prosperity away by making it known to our allies that America's word means nothing and starting retarded trade wars.

No one gives a shit if some Karen is upset about about people calling each other retards. The word has to much utility to be policed out of use. This is why we need Xbox live lobbies to return, let people grow thick skin because Ive been called everything in the urban dictionary.

I may be jaded but I had an undergrad get upset with me once when they asked me to look at some bacterial colonies they were growing on agar plates. I looked at the plates and said they look retarded, as in their growth was retarded because she used minimum media instead of rich media by accident. No I didn't get in trouble with any admins.

  • Need more information to properly diagnose. Is this a new issue? Are you using auto build leveling for every print? Have you tried cleaning everything and rerunning the system calibration? A lot of different things can cause similar issues and it's hard to diagnose from images alone.

  • Paying people to review articles is just going to make things worse. The real problem is open access. In the current system the author of the manuscript has to pay to publish it, and the publisher turns around and asks readers to pay to access it. Its a scam. If research was conducted with any public money the knowledge generated should be public. This is why Elsevier needs to go. If you saw how much money institutions have to pump into these useless publishers to get access to knowledge funded by the public for the public there would be more outrage.
