I just sort by date modified on my work folder and purge stuff older than a year. Anything of value was moved to its permanent home and properly document controlled.

It's a river of trash yes but anything of value floats to the surface.

I routinely scan file shares to find the top oldest modified dates on files.

To me its amazing they've been able to use the same system for that long, it must cost almost nothing to run vs a "proper" system. Kind of assuming it wasn't a constant headache cause then it would be stupid to keep it around.

Basically what I'm doing right now with someone else's tools. Coming from IT I'm actually surprised how solid these tools are from a pure availability point of view, and how the company gets value out of something with basically the smallest amount of infrastructure required to support it. I'm producing a bunch of scheduled and ad-hoc reports as a data analyst and improving the tools used in the process, "automating" is the buzzword used although that has a very different definition to me from a sysadmin background.

I've been on both sides of this as a sysadmin for almost 15 years then as a data analyst. IT has so many requirements and barriers and any end user tool you have free access to will possibly be an easier route than procuring a boutique solution through IT. Yes of course IT will do it proper but that takes longer, just build a tool in excel and use an access database on the file server cause its something you can just immediately do. Yeah its not "right" by IT standards and causes headaches for IT but sometimes it's whatever gets the job done next week is what's going to be in the businesses best interest.

Also a lot of these tools are used how they were designed to be used. If a couple people have a function they need fulfilled and some excel tool with macros can provide that in less than a month and save those people a ton of time then I don't see a problem with it. Just make sure SLA is very clear make it clear they can't blame IT if there's problems, offer the best advice for risk management.

Yeah pretty much, hard to compare them because they cause problems in different ways. Under 100 deaths per year for caffeine overdose, cannabis is associated with more fatalities but not in a causal way. Caffeine isn't a workplace safety issue and doesn't harm judgement, cannabis has very measurable negative effects on cognition. Cannabis is, by no virtue of itself, associated with violence that comes with the black market.

Have you read those executive orders? They're basically all cultural war pandering from Trump. Undoing legislation takes political action not just signing executive orders away. What do you think about Biden explicitly supporting Trump's legislation that does have a major impact like the Trump Tariffs?

This all makes a lot of sense. I view the Republicans and Democrats as different aesthetics of the consenting neoliberal economic arrangement, and agree with a notion of post-politics to describe this situation, where politics becomes increasingly engaged in cultural issues since your arrangement in the political economy is no longer up for debate. The neoliberal system is what's in crisis and is basically running on fumes at this point, no longer sincerely believed in by determining actors within it. As the systemic stresses of degrading neoliberal capitalism turn inward it manifests in different ways politically. Trump doesn't happen from nothing, there are real systemic anxieties underlying that, the problem for Democrats is any serious acceptance and solution of those anxieties is in conflict with the forces that keep them legitimate. The Republicans accept the brutality of the system as necessary and the Democrats try and put a good brand on it.

That's more accurate way to say it, because they use "better" as a justification for not entertaining a third option that is actually good.

It's funny when some of this corruption in the US is brought to light, you envision these huge sums of money, secret bank accounts, etc. Then it's just some loser hiding 10k in gold bars under his bed or some shit.

I told you the option, losing faith in this consensus reality, nobody is doing that for you because your faith in it is contingent on the conditions of your life.

Alternatives have been denied by this consensus reality. The Populists of the 19th century had another vision and were promptly dealt with through imposed segregation, a racial and economic order imposed to divide them. Eugene Debs' vision was dealt with by capital and military interests and internal divisions. Taft-Hartley act denied the power of labor. The red scare eroded class consciousness so you don't even organize or identify around your economic reality anymore. The neoliberal consensus of the last 50 years between the major parties, the military industrial complex driving your country's geopolitics, have brought you to the current moment of the social contract eroding.
