  • they're 100% doing dev work at ms, afaik their contributions are public because chromium is an open source project. and i think it would be very beneficial for larger amounts of people to use edge (only if they're dead set on not using firefox though) because having two different companies compete on that is still better than just having google have a monopoly.

  • keep in mind also that gpt-3.5 and beyond is instruction-trained, so if you give it a task, even implied, it will really want to accomplish that task, unless that goes against some other training. by asking "what is Michael Jackson up to today" you're putting an expectation on it to produce a correct answer, or as close to as it can manage, hence the attempt to go into recent developments or posthumous releases. it's trying to be useful even in situations when it cannot provide anything of value.

this is a bit more important when you're doing prompt engineering, because if you give it two options, one to actually answer a question and one to indicate that it cannot answer under these circumstances, it will have a strong bias against the latter option. if you ask it to improve a sentence or say it's already perfect, for example, it will have a clear aversion to saying it's already perfect. you should usually just ask it to do the task unconditionally, then run a second pass to choose between the two options, because in those cases the text suggests that some task has been accomplished.

  • or keep using your device after you dropped it. or keep using the same device long enough for the battery to wear out. or use the same charger on your phone as you would use on any other device.

it's frickin ludicrous how apple users whose devices break prematurely just go and buy another device from apple, as opposed to doing the sane thing and buying from a different company. like after my lenovo laptop wiped its own bios on a forced "upgrade" i'm sure as fuck not buying lenovo, but if an apple device encountered the same error 9 out of 10 users would just go and wire daddy tim apple another $1500 for a replacement. like wtf, why would they not enforce failures if that's how their users behave

  • on one hand, whatever, today won't be the day i start giving a shit about intellectual property

on the other hand, if you wanted privacy, firefox has always been the right answer. i honestly don't know why you would want to use brave instead of it

  • i'm hungarian. you don't have to explain to me how the soviets operated, it deeply permeates our culture.

central economic planning and master races are not what this is about. we're talking about oppression, and lots of politically left ideologies did that a lot. the book 1984 was so scary not because it's an exploration of an oppressive society, but because the particular flavor of that oppression matches the soviet ideology so well that up until the collapse of the USSR it was a very real possibility that its world would come true.

add to that that most modern-day tankies care a lot less about central planning, all they really want to do is dunk on the west, and end up propping up russia and china in the process, with all their hateful baggage.

  • you have some of a point here, and yeah, for various reasons, including marginalization, its resulting societal standings, and simply the lack of opportunity to industrially fuck up the landscape, indigenous people do in fact tend to end up as better stewards of the land. however, suggesting that this is because they're born special and aren't just following a different culture and incentive structure is a slippery slope that tends to end up in ethnonationalism on the part of whoever colonized a given piece of land first.

colonialism is absolutely a problem to this day, but it's not the only problem there is. while eco-fascism can go to hell, simply opposing it does not automatically clear your ideology of any problems.

  • it's the same bullshit under a different flag. the shit that happened in the eastern bloc was just as oppressive and authoritarian, the simple fact that it's politically considered "left" and not "right" doesn't make it any better.

and the worst part about this world view is that it tends to divide the world into two groups of authies that are the same group that larp against each other, and a bunch of indecisive schmucks in the middle who are weak for not "fully embracing" their "side" and joining one of the two groups. while what's really happening is that those schmucks are just capable of empathy unlike the tankies or nazis who insist they don't totally do the same shit as each other.

  • it's a power fantasy. to be honest, he's very close to the punisher but without saying the quiet part out loud

  • call the national guard. they're waving flags of enemies of the united states and at least two of them brought battle gear. that's an act of war

  • the only mass solution i found to this was that i installed pgadmin, logged into the db, and manually removed all the bot accounts from local_user. you should also remove them from the person table as well (you can easily find them if you do SELECT * FROM person WHERE local = true ORDER BY published DESC in the query tool), that way they don't show up in your instance stats, but removing them from local_user would be enough to stop them from logging in.

  • shows the actual capacity reddit has to operate without the help of their experienced moderators who they managed to collectively piss off

  • the entire context of the conversation has been about bathrooms. your reading comprehension is either terrible and you're lashing out, or you're lying. take your pick.

  • on the surface level, makes sense, yeah. but twitter hosts video, that stuff isn't cheap -- hell, even images aren't cheap and twitter has piss poor ad integration and a meaningless subscription that they made pretty much as uncool to buy as possible. hosting a platform that size is hella expensive.

  • the lemmy way of linking a community is like this: !assholedesign@lemmy.world. i assume, at least, because there are supposedly other communities by the same name on different servers, so this is both unambiguous and works well for people not on the same instance as the server

  • i guess it must have also been sad when parents allowed kids to identify as sinister. meaning left-handed, of course. one moment, it was rightfully shunned, the next moment sinister people started getting everywhere and it was growing at an alarming rate, threatening to take over society...

...until it hit 12.5%, where it flatlined and stayed ever since. turns out if you don't bully people into repressing a trait they're born with, you'll see a meteoric rise in the amount of people you now accept, when they stop (rightfully) fearing that you'll repress them. today, it's beyond trivial that if you think there ever has been a point in history where one eight of all people haven't been left-handed, you're just a moron, but your rhetoric would perfectly fit the era when that started to be accepted.

we don't know exactly how many people are trans, but the sharp rise you see and characterize as "currently relevant in social media" is simply due to society (mostly) letting people finally be who they always have been. realistically, trans people are a minority, but that doesn't mean they don't have the same right to be themselves that you and i already enjoy simply for having been born into the majority.

  • read the post title again. you're on lemmy, you have no excuse to lose context like you were a bigoted version of ai dungeon.

  • probably both. twitter was never profitable afaik, the whole idea was to have either some rich moron or (more likely) a megacorp buy it and everyone who contributed would get a fat final paycheck. but the way musk handled things definitely didn't help either.

  • oh yeah, we know. the problem is, 80% of the country is a rural population and a lot of them just want to "own those libs in budapest" even if they fuck their own life up. that's why the same right-wing party has stayed in government for 13 years now with no change on the horizon.

we tried last year. like really tried, even the left and the far right have made an alliance with one goal: topple this shitty party, everything else is secondary. it didn't even make a dent.

at this point, i see no chance that our eu parliament reps won't be from the same party either. i'll vote against them for sure, but it's just inevitable at this point.

  • sure, but we're at a point with battery chemistry where that no longer really matters that much. the fairphone 4 is already at 3900 mAh and with both phone electronics constantly getting smaller and battery chemistry improving, it's highly likely that this year's fairphone 5 will not only crack the 4000 mAh barrier but fly past it. with a modern mid-range soc (which is really all you need to have a smooth experience outside of games) it' more than enough to get you through the day with a good margin to spare. and that's already a user-servicable design that no doubt guided eu legislature on this issue.
