  • How is this even relevant to the thread lmao.

  • I'd say both are true. The left is actively suppressed on the platform AND the userbase is not that progressive (particularly on geopolitics) because of it being American-centric.

  • This is really alien to me because I'm american and I've been able to point out Germany on a map since I was like, 10? Its a very distinctive shape and position on the map. Idk, maybe its just my brain.

  • I was pretty good at maps in highschool but I forgot a lot of it and never got good at Africa. I have no trouble with the 50 states but I'm american so that tracks. I'm also decent at South America (central america is beyond me though), most of Europe, and Asia.

  • My mom's anti-racism was very liberal white savior but I will always thank her for the fact that she actively encouraged me to make friends with our black neighbors when I was like 4. I unfortunately still lived mostly in white dominated areas growing up and had very few black acquittances and no close black friends. Though I did have a few close asain friends in highschool I guess. But still, I went to a highschool with like a grand total of two black people, and the one I was friendly with had been adopted by a white family. So while my mom did instill that racism is wrong, i still lacked necessary perspective for a long time. Pretty much didnt really get interested and involved in race issues until I was on tumblr when Mike Brown happened. And I still haven't really had as many one on one conversations and friendships with black people as I would like.

Idk, maybe I'm being weird about race even with this post. I just kind of regret the fact that being in white dominated areas meant I didnt get to have the kind of experiences that would help me have been better on race earlier. I did at least have no open racists in my family growing up, which was good. And in addition to my mom my paternal grandma has always been proactively anti-racist. Both in a liberal way, but better than the upbringing a lot of white Americans have.

Sorry for the info dump lol.

ETA: OH I should mention that one positive experience with racial diversity in my life has been working with POC children in my past jobs with kids. Thats been beneficial I think. For example I specifically remember viscerally feeling the anxiety my latine students had during the rise of Trump.

  • Is it OK if I post the same thing here that I posted in the hexbear megathread? I'm just wanna do it right now. These feelings are hitting me hard. DOnt worry though, I'm about to go to bed.

The problem I'm having with the back and forth with libs is my inherent empathy. I feel for them and want to reach out with them. I can't (Usually) just aggressively dunk and move on.

The worst yet for me was the thing earlier with the guy who can't engage with political memes at all because he thinks they all MIGHT be Russian social media infiltration. I started getting sincerely and genuinely invested in being concerned for their mental health. I actually had like, a continuous low level panic attack going. My body was tense and nervous.

I know the response here is going to be to tell me to just log off and stop getting invested in this, but I really just wanted to vent about how all this is making me feel. I want to help these people out of the bubbles they are in. When they use thought terminating cliches to avoid thinking, it upsets me because god I WANT THEM TO THINK. For their sake.

  • The fact any and every comment gets 10+ upvotes in 15 minutes is unnatural for a site like this. There should be some comments with under 5 upvotes but I NEVER see hexbear comments get under that.

What can I say, we're a united front when it comes to arguing with liberals. Honestly, we didnt really see upvote totals as high as these before federation, which I think is a combination of the fact that we're, like I said, united in the face of these issues, and also the fact that some people in other instances agree with us. We care about each other and communist is a collectivist ideology. There's also a lot of us. And trust me, if you believe I"M not a bot then I can tell you that in the three years before federation noone here stuck me as not being a genuine human being. Other than the bit accounts and like the like, two actual bots we made for specific purposes.

I have a hard time believing any community is that gender diverse.

Damn, thats weird because every community I'm a part of is gender diverse. Even not explictly leftist ones, like I'm in a discord server for a streamer called Barry and like half the server is trans or nonbinary. I'm pretty used to interacting with trans and enby people in my life at this point. Have a fair few of them in my life offline as well. This seems like a you problem.

  • The way "tankie" is used today it just means communist who has actually read communist theory and understands the nature of imperialism and applies it correctly to the current geopolitical situation in the world.

Solipsism and paranoia win the day in your brain yet again. People can't possibly earnestly have these opinions, because I'm not used to them, must be bots. Doesnt matter that they have three years of post history where they talk about innocuous stuff that has nothing to do with Russia and china. Thats just part of the act. And the fact that you think the pronoun tags make it MORE likely that we're bots is even more laughable.

Its really fucking depressing seeing how effective the "bot" propaganda has been.

  • We're a radically pro-trans community. A purge of transphobes near the beginning was a formative moment for our community. We're radically welcoming of trans folks, so a lot of trans folks post here.

Also trans folks are disproportionately leftist (for a good reason, liberation for trans folks cannot come through capitalism), the idea that "tankies" would be majority "he/him neckbeards" is silly, if not actually outright transphobic.

  • Fair enough.

All the major social media companies I'm aware of are based in Silcon Valley, IE the United States. I'm not saying that foreign governments don't try to astroturf them, but surely companies based IN america are more likely to be heavily influenced BY American influences (corporate and government)? And surely you should be more afraid of having your opinion influenced by propaganda from the people who actually hold the power over the platform, than from foreign governments trying to infiltrate the platform? Surely you should be more afraid of the powers that be that are actually close to home for you?

This is my thing with people that are afraid of Russia or CPC influence. I'm not a Christian, but I do think that Jesus had a really good damn point when he said "take the beam out of your own eye". Focus on whats going on in your own neck of the woods.

Its like the "TikTok harvesting data for the Chinese government" controversy, why are we worried about that when American social media companies are harvesting our data right here at home. What rational reason do I have to be more afraid of a foreign government than the one I actually live under the power of?

ETA: Porkroll Posadist (the one with the arthur clenching fist PFP) made a really good post about this here: https://hexbear.net/comment/3714293

  • And where are those social media companies based?

  • I'm sure you think you found evidence of a Hexbear user's "ties to Russia" but I promise that Hexbear is just a bunch of leftist shitposters. Your fear of Russian influence is not healthy nor tied to reality. I'm not even concern trolling here, I'm genuinely concerned for your mental health. This paranoia is not healthy.

  • The weirder thing is is that I checked their post history and they said they're conservative, though based on their fear of Russian memes I'm guessing a Never Trumper? Weird.

  • I dont know for fact, but I treat any political meme like it might.

I don't really think this is a rational or particularly healthy stance to take on political memes. I can maybe understand if your stance was just "keep the worldnews posts serious", though I'd disagree with that too. But saying that you're trying to avoid Russian influence by avoiding memes is... idk. Doesn't really make sense to me. Political memes aren't inherently Russian.

You also have to consider Russia's like, motives here. I don't really see a reason for them to want to make pudding jokes about DeSantis.

  • Honestly, you're not wrong, and DeSantis, being a Disney adult himself, should have understood this.

  • I'm aware of the existence of Russian "meme warfare" though I think its effect on politics in America is severely overstated.

But uh, how is this meme that you're complaining about a "Russian meme". Or are you just under the delusion that all political memes are Russian or something? How is making fun of Desantis for the pudding thing something Russians would do?

  • I used to be very certain about the "Desantis is the effective fascist we warned you about" thing but more and more his buffoonery comes out, and I don't think he'll be president. That said, he's being pretty effective in Florida despite his buffoonery.

  • I can actually understand all that very well. Sorry about your negative experience

I do want to mention one thing though

it’s this that made me consider your community dangerous, especially for minority groups.

Our "weaponized anger" is quiet frequently used in defense of minority groups, particularly trans people. She's gone now but one of our original admins, TransComrade69, was militantly defensive of trans people and it really shaped how our community formed. We also do our best to do the same for other queer people, bipoc, the disabled and nuerodiverse, women, the poor, and (most relevant to the arguments we get into here) people from the global south.

But I actually do understand how our community's stance can be offputting for some people and wouldnt recommend it to just anyone, even leftists.
