They tried to do the same in the 1970 general elections, and even though they initially didn't succeed, they didn't let the winning majority party to form the government by illegal arrests and violence and forcefully dismantling them, which resulted in riots and eventually allowed East Pakistan, aka Bangladesh to get independence from Pakistan.
