For the communities I participated in, I usually hung out in /new, not /rising. There was absolutely hate speech going on: the troll and influencer accounts also hung out in /new, trying to get their comments in early enough to be read by anyone else entering the thread. It's particularly noticable late at night, when more of the US is asleep and more of Asia / Russia is awake.
I haven't watched the video. In another thread, someone pointed out that this is generally something they do after they've agreed to ship out a free replacement tv.
Yeah, that'll work about as well as reminding them about the Reagan tax cuts, Bush's wars, and Trump's fuckery ballooned the national debt that they're always so "worried" about.
This is actually what I think Huffman's biggest weakness as a CEO is. CEOs are supposed to be forward-thinking, coming in ahead of or on top of the next new wave. But Huffman sees an exciting new tech trend, waits until it gets big and then tries to cash in on it. He didn't start reddit crypto until crypto was at it's peak. He didn't do reddit NFTs until they were peaking. He didn't try to do reddit video until after TikTok was huge. He only shut the API door after he'd paid all the bandwidth and infrastructure cost to transfer all of reddit's valuable user commentary to multiple AI companies, including some of the richest corporations in the world. He absolutely fucking sucks as a CEO.
That's actually the thing that gets me about this whole situation. They don't create the communities. They don't create the content. They don't add comments. They don't upvote or downvote content or comments. They don't moderate their communities. They don't really respond to support tickets, and rely on other users to help others out. That's a lot people they don't have to pay.
Imgur was created because reddit refused to host native images. They refused to host native video. If you change or delete something, they only keep one version as backup. The vast majority of their content is text. Their storage and bandwidth needs should be comparatively minimal.
They've spent decades refusing to upgrade the user experience: RES has all the features reddit refused to make. The moderator toolbox has all the moderator tools reddit refused to make. The apps have all the features and all the disability features reddit refused to make. Their own app is something they bought from the original developer for a minimal amount of money - and then they made it worse.
What are they spending their money on? Reddit crypto was a failure. Reddit NFTs were a failure. Reddit streaming events (RPAN) was a failure. I'm sure they invest money into their April Fool's thing, but how much does that really cost?
They don't. But the dot-com frenzy where people threw money at anything tech-related is long over, and investment firms aren't going to give lots of money to a barely-profitable business with a long history of bad decisions. Oh, they'll buy some stock but it's not going to be the massive frenzy Huffman desperately wants. He's going to take whatever he gets and work on his doomsday bunker, and reddit will continue to contribute to the enshittification of both the internet, and society in general.
