  • But there are different types of temporary. Temporary because the code got updated/upgraded or new and better software got implemented feels fine. It feels like your work was part of the never ending march of technical progress. Temporary because it gets ripped out if favor of a different, inferior suite hits hard.

If my code gets superseded by someone else's complete rewrite that is better, then I'm all for it. If my code gets thrown out because we're switching to a different, inferior system that is completely incompatible with my work, then that just hits like a ton of bricks.

  • Alternatively, the easier sign (since a good chunk of the courts are complicit) is when we started being ruled by decree. The second easiest is when language is getting policed.

After checking my notes, that started January 20, 2025, when sweeping Executive Orders were decreed that are being treated as the force of law when they most certainly are not. The removal of "T" from LGBTQ, and enforcement of the stupid, unilateral renaming of the Gulf of Mexico is the other.

Congratulations, we live in a dictatorship.

  • Prices/inflation are a convenient excuse for voting for Trump. It's the reason polite people use to justify their vote knowing everything they do so they can continue going through polite society.

In reality, they're just bigots, christofascists, etc. (source: my family)

  • They are playing a really dangerous game. That means that government workers can start using non-preferred pronouns for Trump and his lackeys. If they want to play mis-gendering games, we can, too. I can't wait for some military officer to say "Good morning, ma'am," to Hegseth or someone to ask Nancy Mace why "he's" in the women's restroom if Sarah McBride, an actual woman, can't. Let's see how much they like to be mis-gendered.

  • That's...a really weird thing to send a death threat over. Conservatives really aren't right in the head and need to get some professional help.

  • Yes! If you're an American and ever wondered how you would have reacted in 1930s Germany, ask yourself what you're doing right now. Same answer...

  • Those who stayed home hold some responsibility

Second most of the responsibility, actually (actual Trump voters take the most responsibility). They screwed up, and now we're all paying the price.

But now we have bigger fish to fry. There’s a constitutional crisis on, and a united front is needed against the right.

Also true. If Trump voters and non-voters realize that they screwed up badly and want to work to fix it, then we need to accept their apology, forgive them, and let them stand with the rest of civilized humanity in countering Trump, Must, and their goons.

  • Ah, gotcha. I didn't go too deep into the code, just did a cursory look. I think it's still an interesting concept.

  • Agreed! In my little online ecosystem, there's been a number of stories of federal workers resisting, cities teaching people their rights to thwart ICE, etc. Since that may or may not make it out of certain bubbles, we should be boosting stories like that and sending them around so others don't feel alone and do feel empowered to resist.

  • Just based on my initial understanding of the situation, it looks like pilot error on the part of the helicopter. So, Trump's not wrong; he's just an asshole, and him injecting himself into this is counterproductive. Conspiracy theories relating to this is just...stupid.

  • I don't know why this is getting downvoted. It seems like an interesting concept for certain use cases, and it looks like it's just a tiny team.

  • Early Warning Signs of Fascism

  • That's actually an interesting point, and it dovetails with something else I read recently. The right has correctly diagnosed much of our society's ills, but many are too ignorant or indoctrinated to identify the correct solution. Instead, many have fallen in league with the fascists because they've been duped. (That's not to say that many on the right are just simply fascists and bad people because too many are.)

  • These warning signs have been manifest for decades at this point. The seeds were sown long ago, and now it is time to reap what we as a society have sown.

  • No. The United States does not have a king, emperor, or any other kind of monarch. As the Republicans are fond of saying: We are a republic. As a republic--specifically a democratic republic--no one person is above the law. No one in this country is so mighty, so powerful that he can usurp the rights of another or perform actions that would land another in prison.

We have not lived up to the promise of our republic. Those who seek to benefit from that flaw and those who look to exacerbate that flaw are enemies of liberty and should be treated as such.

  • Good. Don't do the fascists' job for them. Be like Phyllis Fong and the others in the government who are resisting this. Every second they are forced to force people out and defend their policies and actions is a second they aren't acting against vulnerable people.

  • Hell yeah! This is great! I'm glad I'm not the only one sharing it around to friends and neighbors. True resistance is not the flashy stuff; it's a whole of society approach to stop fascists in their tracks. True resistance is the sum total of small acts to inconvenience and impede a fascist.

  • It's not the most practical thing in the universe, but I have a small VPS that I host my email on for myself and a couple others (5 addresses in total). It's a bit of a pain to set up, but once it's working, it is really nice to have that kind of control.

  • That's sad. It was really disheartening to see the amount of preemptive cooperation.

  • From my experience, some are and some aren't. It's a numbers game, and hopefully the ratio is positive.

  • The sad thing that this was not Trump; he just signed the EO. He probably doesn't even know this lesson exists. This was some mid-level officer trying to hew to the EO and a memo from the Acting Secretary of the Air Force. The fact that it was this fast shows how many people all over the government are willing to comply with these immoral orders.
