  • Why do you bring up race? Is there anything that would imply that?

People are lazy and incompetent as fuck, and it's been an industry wide problem that publishing companies in general have lower and lower standards of quality.

  • IDK, I think that's kind of flawed logic. E.g. "we should stop using gasoline for cars and switch to electric" - would you say "what a stupid thing to say. everyone uses gas so we shouldn't try to stop"?

And are you not aware of Signal? It's open source, and the default server is not, but it doesn't matter since it is E2E encrypted, just like Proton. The difference is that ProtonMail allows you to communicate unencrypted with non-ProtonMail accounts.

I think all they're saying is that, similar to gas users, there are many people who will not stop using it or just don't care unless we sunset gas cars / email for them.

I do agree with that, and in both cases it isn't something which can happen overnight, but it is a serious long term problem which IMO we should be pushing to solve.

  • IDK, I feel like I still feel like I don't agree with this approach. In fact, the entire name about "shinigami eyes" makes me think it's inspired by Death Note, an anime about a guy with a twisted and wrong sense of justice, using shinigami powers to kill people he thinks are bad.

    E.g.

    1. What if someone said things like this, had a conversation, then changed their opinion? Why should they have that struck against them forever?
    2. Things can be easily misinterpreted, especially online through text. Are they talking about "never being a biological woman"? Having a uterus? Something else? Gender? Maybe they don't understand the difference. A lot of people don't. Mistakes are the first step toward understanding. Maybe they didn't understand something, or maybe they worded something ambiguously. It's easy to do.

I think if we want to change people for the better, than means talking with them, interacting with them, and helping them to change.

  • Because there are some other manufacturers, e.g. Samsung, which don't manufacture in China (for the most part), and IMO the problem of centralizing the world's supply chain in China is more important than what Fairphone is trying to do.

  • Don't forget the fact they manufacture it in an oppressive authoritarian regime, where the sales tax goes to fund over 1 million Uighurs being held in literal concentration camps.

Imagine if 80 years ago there were products labeled "Ethically Made in Nazi Germany", and the marketing team said it's important to help the individual small businesses there so that the good people can have a higher standard of living.

It's mind boggling to me that people are falling for this.

  • My point is that everyone is "different in one way or another", so we're all fair game. That might be getting bullied in front of everyone for being a stereotypical nerd, or it may be another clique talking about you behind your back for dressing preppy and hanging out with the "cool kids".

  • I mean, I'm all for reducing cost and optimizing efficiency. We've been doing that in every industry since the dawn of time. Coal miners hopefully don't exist in a decade from now.

But it's stupid to think AI is already there for most things, and it's bad to lay off people who could easily be working on things AI can't.
