I am more talking about amphetamine rather than methamphetamine. Chemically it's the same as Adderall, and you can find actual Adderall from the darknet or dealers as well.

Care to explain this statement?

Methamphetamine is literally used as a treatment for ADHD. It's also fairly easy to get a hold of amphetamine on the darknet which is used in things like Adderall. It honestly isn't that bad of an idea to try amphetamine or even methamphetamine if you actually know the correct dosage range. Recreational users would typically start at a higher dosage than someone looking for medicinal effects. Over time though medical users can end up on a similar dosage to a recreational user due to tolerance.

Outside of storage servers and ZFS no one is buying RAM specifically to use it as disk cache. You will also find that Windows laptops are also designed to be left in sleep rather than hibernate.

While that might have some impact, it's not really the main problem with Windows. For the most part it's how it's actually engineered. For a start look at their compiler.

No, I want companies to stop spreading this bullshit and for people to stop falling for it. I don't hold any stocks at all. In fact that kind of bullshit I am fairly against.

Yeah it is easier to do it on a desktop or over a network. That's what I was trying to imply. Although having an NPU can help. Regardless I would rather be using my own server than something like ChatGPT.

We are talking about PC vs Mac. Both have the same problem when it comes to chromium based things.

I use Virtual Machines and run local LLMs. LLMs need VRAM rather than CPU RAM. You shouldn't be doing it on a laptop without a serious NPU or GPU, if at all. I don't know if I will be using VMs heavily on this machine or not, but that would be a good reason to have more RAM. Even so 32 GiB should be enough for a few VMs running concurrently.

Maybe this is true if you use Windows. If you use Linux on your PC versus macOS on a MacBook you will probably find the PC performs comparably if not better.

The annoying thing is I have had people claim that 8GB and 16GB is fine on Apple and works better than on PC laptops. To the point one redditor point blank refused to believe I owned an Apple laptop. I literally had to take a photograph of said laptop and show it to them before they would believe me about the RAM capacity.

Serious question what are you using all that RAM for? I am having a hard time justifying upgrading one of my laptops to 32 GiB, nevermind 64 GiB.

This was maybe a good point to make back during the pandemic when programmers actually had good job opportunities and could find somewhere else. Nowadays you will struggle to find a job as a programmer unless you have lots of experience. So people have to take any job they can get, whether they like it or not. Some people working in this field have gotten themselves into financial trouble doing things like buying houses based on their salary and then getting fired and only having lower paying positions available.

Honestly, if I was arguing for perpetual growth on a finite planet, I wouldn’t tell anyone I was a scientist, let alone demand someone “take the L” for having to explain to you that our energy consumption can’t grow perpetually.

I never argued for perpetual growth on earth. I think you've completely missed what I am talking about. I only started arguing with you because it became obvious you had no idea what you were talking about with regards to renewables and nuclear.

If you had started off by explaining that degrowth to you just meant not expanding infinitely on earth then most of this argument wouldn't have even happened. I don't support infinite growth on one planet either. I support expanding out into the solar system and even further away in the long term, but even that obviously has it's limits somewhere.

To me it sounded like you were saying we can't move to renewables without shrinking the economy massively and tanking standards of living.

Looking back at this argument I can see it's one of those where neither party actually understands the others position, and is actually just arguing against what they think the other person believes.

Why not? It can be adapted to a smaller drive size fairly easily during filesystem creation.

XPS aren't business machines, just premium consumer machines. They aren't built to the same standard, as would honestly be expected given they cost less. I've had my own bad experiences with an XPS laptop and wouldn't buy one again. Too many compromises in the name of being thin and lightweight.

To be honest I was more suggesting second hand machines where warranty from the OEM isn't really a consideration.

I think you will find most OEMs don't really care about customer support unless you are a business. HP, Asus, and friends all have their own horror stories. There are only a few companies like Framework I actually trust.

A lot of the laptops made by Huawei and Xiaomi are MacBook-like in design at least. Framework is much more repairable though as are business laptops from HP or Dell. Dell in particular has made some quite long battery life laptops in the past like the Latitude 7410 and 7400, though those aren't particularly new they are at least cheap when bought second hand.

In terms of OS you got to go with some Linux flavor as they offer various DEs some of which are mac like. Obviously macOS and Linux terminals are somewhat similar anyway. PopOS is a great option.
