  • I can see this argument, but I just hate the way the industry is heading, to extract as much money as possible by selling upgrades, new frames, etc etc. The price of a new bike has also risen 2-3x since before COVID and won't go down. Frame materials are becoming more resource intensive, parts are becoming less replaceable and more proprietary.

  • Yes, I have cycled a fair amount and raced too. Now I have downscaled my cycling to just getting around. Would you care to elaborate? If I was not clear I would like to explain myself. I knew many people who were always looking for the next upgrade to get a little performance boost, and willing to pay a great deal of money for it.

  • I don't know the ideologies of the protestors, but I do agree with protesting against "big cycling". Cycling around on a trusty steel bike which you can repair yourself is environmentally friendly. Buying a new carbon fiber bike every few years because it is 2% more aero than the last is not. Instead of standardized parts, the cycling industry wants you to buy cheap ones that break fast, and can only be replaced with their specific parts. They sell this to you by including some upgrades in chains, cassettes etc. The cycling industry is the same as any other industry, it exists to make profits. Truly sustainable things do not come from making profits.

  • Not just phones imo, modern computing devices are unnecessarily powerful. Like modern work laptops with 11th gen i5s. They should be able to handle word processing. Computers with a 300mhz CPU can write to text files. But windows still manages to chug with a few office apps open. How they manage to cram that much bloat in astounds me

  • Oh no people aren't buying their magical glass rectangles to suck themselves into social media (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻)

  • You either need to set the DNS in your phone settings somewhere or route all traffic through a VPN (should be a setting somewhere too). You can then use a VPN where you can set the DNS. I use tailscale for this

  • Was shocking to me, outside of the US, that they would ride on horses and whip people. It's like a sick fantasy.

  • This is the OnePlus dude right?

  • Exactly. Can even use fairytale mode to make it less obvious

  • I absolutely would, he's abusing his position as prime minister to make himself filthy rich. Of course all of the previous conservative PMs have done the same, and I think they are all equally disgusting.

  • I'm not sure if brain size directly correlates with intelligence. We also have pretty limited methods of describing and measuring intelligence, intra as well as inter-species.

  • A bit off the mark there, I did not mean that sexism is when a theory is challenged, and neither am I American. I was referring to the fact that most of these evolutionary anthropology dogmas were established a long time ago by men, when science had basically no participation by women (That's the sexist bit). So now when our slightly more balanced scientists look at these old dogmas they can start to challenge it. In those times saying that women don't run as efficiently because of wider hips would probably not have raised any discussion (Because there were no women). Now women can rightly challenge it and look for data to support the claim, which seems to be lacking, and in fact it supports the null hypothesis that it does not affect efficiency of running.

I also don't mean it has to be women to challenge that idea, but it makes sense to me that they would be more likely to.

  • Seems like you got it to work, I'm not sure about traefik requiring that cname for ssl, our setup does not. But yes the way we've done it does require that tailscale is always enabled. Even when on lan. If you've managed to setup both LAN and tailscale connections for one thing that's pretty cool.

  • Horrifying how they talk about "must increase defence investment", like they're using this conflict to gear up all of NATO for ww3.

  • Nice to see some other opinions on this topic, having this old story by an old man prof in the 60s being criticised is good. Seems like evolutionary anthropology has been plagued by a bit of old school sexism

  • China is already working on the software part of chip design, and they have domestic capability to produce 14nm chips (SMIC) that is using ASML machines though. (But the US cannot take them away, only stop them buying more). I'm sure they are considering building their own fabrication machines. I fully believe China is capable of domesticating the whole fabrication process given some time. China was able to design and build their own domestic computer in the cold war, a few years after the US, but taking less total time than the US did. China is the world's leading productive superpower, and what I think is most important, is they have a culture of teamwork, rather than competition, to drive innovation.
