We should all apply this sentiment from Churchill to the current situation. Every little act of resistance adds up.

I agree with everything you said. None of us knows what might happen.

But for everyone out there screaming "Do something!" (Myself included), this is undoubtedly something.

The alternative is to do nothing in fear of what Trump might do.

That's what Trump wants. He has the power that he's given. To acquiesce is to grant him power.

That's what every law firm and university that's capitulated to Trump has done, so I'll support Van Hollen's open defiance any day of the week.

He's probably about as safe as anyone can be. A sitting US senator is among the most powerful people in the world.

Would Trump gladly imprison Van Hollen in a foreign concentration camp? Absolutely.

We're not there yet, and acts of resistance, no matter how small, are how we prevent us from getting there in the first place.

That's what I do. Jellyfin + Tailscale + Apple TV box. It works like a charm.

I think it's becoming more necessary with every passing day. I don't trust reddit, not with the Trump regime in power.

I personally really like Cryptpad. I haven't heard of Fileverse, so I'll check it out. Cryptpad is the closest thing I've found to a drop-in Google Suite replacement.

There's actually a part of me that finds this heartening. This guy is completely and utterly ignorant, but he's not a cultist.

Doomer do-nothings are so incredibly frustrating. I get the frustration, but spreading apathy is not useful. Authoritarianism flourishes when apathy takes root among the populace.

He might be a billionaire, but he seems like someone with genuine empathy and concern for his fellow humans. I'm glad someone of his stature his saying it with his chest, to paraphrase from a recent episode from the Bulwark.

It shows a level of moral courage and fortitude that's sorely needed right now. I'm so glad he's standing up.

Last part of his speech hits hard.

“I’ve been reflecting, these past four weeks, on two important parts of my life: my work helping to build the Illinois Holocaust Museum and the two times I’ve had the privilege of reciting the oath of office for Illinois Governor.

“As some of you know, Skokie, Illinois once had one of the largest populations of Holocaust survivors anywhere in the world. In 1978, Nazis decided they wanted to march there.

“The leaders of that march knew that the images of Swastika clad young men goose stepping down a peaceful suburban street would terrorize the local Jewish population – so many of whom had never recovered from their time in German concentration camps.

You make a really excellent point.

Something similar is playing out with DOGE finding "waste" and "fraud." Very little in the say if of evidence, much in the way of waving around papers at a press conference / shitposting on Twitter and screeching "Woke DEI spending has been slashed."

Tbh, I get it. I understand why it works. Most people aren't political junkies. Most people don't really follow the news. They're busy just trying to get through their day.

That said, I read a good comment once- "You might not care about politics, but politics cares about you." I only wish more people understood that. Unfortunately, our economic system works against it.

Random aside, I wish we had strong labor unions in the US. They'd be very beneficial at this time.
