Nothing has zero risk attached. We’re pumping radioactive material into the atmosphere all the time in coal power plants, and nobody bats an eye. This isn’t even a failure condition, this is just normal.

The software was so bad that if you didn't keep up with emergency security fixes for even a week, the forum would instantly be taken over by someone. Being hacked was the natural state of that software.

Lemmy would have to fix federation first, until then it’s just modern forum software.

These forums never were well organized.

It’s an inherent problem with the way federation is designed in the Fediverse. Since all content is replicated, this includes stuff like CP. If the admins wouldn’t defederate after learning about it, they’d willingly host it, making them legally liable.

Unfortunately federation doesn’t work with Lemmy. I have to create a new account on nearly every instance, because they defederate all the time due to spam and CP issues.

It's a new packaging law. Every non-Austrian merchant who wants to ship goods to Austria has to have a local notary acting as a representative who has to register the packaging used for shipments with the local authorities and is personally held liable for this. There are local notaries that offer this service for foreign merchants for about €800 per year. However, Austria is such a small market that this most likely eats up all of the revenue from Austrian customers for small merchants, so most just stopped shipping to the country. Of course, large merchants like Amazon easily can handle that fee.

It takes a bit of effort to avoid amazon, and it does cost a bit more in money and convenience, but it is possible to not buy from them.

Ha, here in Austria the government has effectively made it impossible for small vendors to sell their stuff. Amazon is pretty much all that's left.

Not really, the world of Mad Max appears to have an infinite amount of gas supply. This is very unlikely to happen in the real world.
